What is the legality of the Masterkey shotgun?

I've always loved the look of the Masterkey shotgun, but haven't found if it's legal in my home state of California (or anywhere in the U.S., for that matter). For those that don't know it's an Ithaca shotgun attached to the bottom of an M-16, which for my purposes I'd use a California legal AR-style rifle (10 round fixed mag, no "evil" features, etc).

Would it be legal to do? The shotgun would be permanently attached without using tools to take the thing apart, so the gun would meet overall length requirements. I know rifle over shotgun configurations are legal in the two calibers in question (Savage 24f with .223 over 12 gauge, for example). However, I've never seen one in person or online so I don't know if there are laws against it.

Assuming it's legal, what would be the best way to create one? just hack job a shotgun from the used racks at a local gun shop? I would probably need some sort of bracketing and bracing system... and enough money to get it all done.

Your help is appreciated!

I believe the Masterkey would be considered a separate weapon, as such a NFA Class III as a short barreled shotgun. In California? forget about it.

Added: And what the heck is the point? Seems like an ingenious solution to a non-existent problem. Doesn't somebody on the entry team usually have a shotgun anyway?

Outside of a video game, have you ever seen a real one, or handled an M4 with one attached? Be honest, don't make up something to impress a stranger.

I have handled one, and I'll tell you in no uncertain terms, that unless you're a soldier in the field, or a cop, those things are useless. They throw the entire balance of the weapon off center, you're constantly being pulled forward when you shoulder the weapon to fire the M4, the "master key" shotgun is a heavy awkward appliance that is rarely used. It's a specialty item that has very specific purposes. Even if they're legal where you are, in california I don't beleive they are, but even if they were, you'd soon get tired of it and it's weight attached to your M4gery and have a thousand dollar shotgun you'll never use.

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/avPKO

as been said, you'd have to get a SBS tax stamp permit from the ATF, and you'd have to either get a gun converted by a licensed maker of NFA items, or find one on the market and have it transferred by a class 3 dealer. it'd be rare and expensive and you'd double the weight of your rifle. and your state might ban you from hunting with an SBS or purchasing one. as someone mentioned, Serbu Super Shorties, are AOWs, if i remember correctly and they don't mount under anything. you'd be looking at more trouble than it'd be worth.

Once you cut into that shotgun it is immediately too short to be legal without BATFE approval.

Even if you permanently attach it, the BATFE is going to consider it a separately numbered firearm and will still need approval.

Red jacket did it and your going to need a class 3 dealer. I think it's not worth the trouble in cali

Kalifornia does not allow civilian ownership of short-barreled shotguns. It would be a felony for you to have one.
