Why does God only care that you sinned, and not the severity of the sin?

If someone kills another man because he was breaking into his house, would he be as sinful as a man who killed another man out of rage?

If a man commits adultery, is he just as sinful as a man who commits rape?

If a man lies to save another's life, is he as sinful as a man who lies for personal gain? Or if a man lies to make someone feel better, is he as sinful as the man who lies for gain?

If God exists, I think he's far more complex than all y'all crazy religious people think, and has a wider spectrum of emotion rather than just paternalism and rage.

But as it stands, no one knows if he exists or not. Have at it.

Update:

I'm an empirical agnostic. Which is sorta kinda like atheism. The notion of atheism seems to reject any possibility of there being a god, while empirical agnosticism admits that no one knows either way and will gladly consider evidence for one side or the other.

Because even the least little sin will separate us from God. Surely murder is much more evil than a little white lie, but either of the two is enough to break the bond between God and mankind. Look at what taking a bite out of an apple did. Okay it may not have been an apple, but you get the picture.

In His Sermon on the Mount Jesus said anger is as bad as murder and lust as bad as adultery. We see degree of severity in each, but the point Jesus wanted to make is that for us, it's impossible not to sin. No matter how minor the offense, it's still disobedience to God.

For God who exists outside space and time, the 70 or 80 years we spend in this world has no significance when compared to eternity. In fact the Bible says this life is a mere vapor compared to eternity. And it's that other life, the one Adam forfeited 6,000 years ago, that concerns God.

The biggest thing is "who" says its a sin. Priests and Pastors can tell you that you are now sin free because you "confessed" or "prayed" but how do they know. They are acting as the voice of "God" and say they are doing his will. What is his will? He has many commandments which can be broken and you can still be saved. Everyone seems to know his will yet they can't seem to agree with one another. How is it that so many people can be right and at the same time be so wrong.

God does consider the severity of sin, as well as the the degree of goodness. for instance, there are a huge number of things mentioned as sins, but only 10 made it on the 10 commandments.

as for goodness, there's that passage in the bible where the different virtues are mentioned, but it says "the greatest of these is love".

and in terms of judgements, there's each person has a place in heaven. one example of that was the man on a cross next to jesus, who earned a place in heaven at the right hand of jesus.

so God does take into account degrees of goodness, or degrees of evil, and degrees of punishment.

    The way i understand it,

God doesnt care what kind of sin you commited. The bottomline is that you sinned, and God HATES sin.

I understand what your saying. IT doesnt make sense that God punishes a theif and a murderer the same. But thats a human way of looking at things. We cant understand how God sees things.

But i also believe that god FORGIVES everyone the same. Its confusing and it doesnt seem right to most people.

Sorry if this doesnt help at all :(

I'm not sure about other sects, but Catholics differ between venial and mortal sins. Only mortal sins will get you sent to hell.

  • Or you have finally realized that none of it makes any sense and you can start reserching atheism.
