Why do eBooks cost more than printed books?

Are the eBook sellers or the book publishers trying to gouge consumers? I saw an eBook on Amazon yesterday that cost $21; the paperback version was half that. Is there anything consumers can do about it?

Update:

For those who don't know, an eBook doesn't need paper or printing; it's strictly digital. You just download it.

Maybe it is because the market allows it. I mean they can get more money so they do this.

If I have to go to the store to buy a book or order it with postage & then have to carry it with me on a trip or anywhere it could be heavy & not as easy to handle as a digital book.

So the ebooks are actually convenient. I myself don't know much about this due to my own finances but from what I know I would think I could have 10 books at home I want to read & that would be a heavy bad to carry but the digital gives me the option to pick any one I want only carrying my lightweight device.

So it is convient in many ways. No dusting books. No hauling them off to the goodwill store. No clutter so more space.

None that I've seen like that. Most of the e-books I've seen are at or a a few dollars below the price of what ever the price of the current cheapest print version is. In other words if they are only in hardback the e-book is more than if the book is in paperback. I couple of times I've seen both the "hardback" and "paperback" e-books listed for the same book.

The only e-books I've seen in that price range tend to be self published, vanity published or print on demand books. They tend to be higher because the services of editing, selecting a cover and publishing the book all fall to the author. So they are trying to make a profit and make back the money they spend per novel.

The vast majority of books I have seen have the ebook price of close to $10, way less than the hardcover price and you don't have to wait the extra year for the paperback to come out.

In the UK eBook are more expensive because they charge you VAT on ebooks and don't on paper books. Its annoying but that's the way it is!!

There's a $21 e-book out there? Wow. All the ones I see are ten dollars or under. (Maybe twelve if it's one thousand pages or something.)

$21? It might cost more because it's newer and long.
