Can gas furnace's heat exchanger become clogged?
Hi guys! A furnace tech came over to my house today to do routine maintenance on the gas furnace. At the end, he told me that the "heat exchanger" in the furnace was plugged and needed to be cleaned, and that it would cost $250 to do so ($400 if he had to come back another time). This sounded kind of shady and so I declined. My question, can the "heat exchanger" in a gas furnace actually become clogged?
Thanks!

Hi there,
My thought is you did exactly the right thing. It sounds "shady" to me too.
I have never heard of a furnace heat exchanger becoming plugged either.
Why not call your local gas company to send someone to check it out.
They will tell the truth and if it really is plugged they either could clean it for less money or recommend someone.
Hope this helps,
Al

Heat exchangers do corrode, but that's generally on the outside, the part the flames contact.
I have never heard of them clogging.
