  • Who should pay for trimming the row of trees?

There's a long row of tall trees that belong to my neighbor that is planted right along the border of our two properties (but on his side). They definitely belong to him but recently it has grown over to my side and is actually pushing back my lawn (the parts underneath his trees are now dead). Now, I know I'm well within my rights to trim back those trees back until they're just inside my property (and he has agreed). However, we're not sure who should pay for it (it'll cost $450).

My township's bylaw only says that I have the right to trim them, but says nothing about who should pay for it. They're his trees, after all, and they're planted so close to my property, so shouldn't he have to pay for it?

  • My friend consistently needs a ride. Am I wrong to feel resentment?

Let me start off by saying that I've known this friend for over a decade. And in those 13+ years, I have JUST ONCE rode in a car driven by him, and it was only when I was helping him with one of his errands (delivering a TV for recycling). Every single other time, it would ALWAYS be me giving him a ride; let it be to the movies, to the bar, to wherever.

He lives pretty close to me, and giving him a ride only adds about 10 min to my journey, so in the beginning I didn't really mind that much at all and would always agree to do so. However, after 13+ years, it's getting tired. I started to drop hints that I no longer wish to do so and would much rather just meet him at our destination. But he never seems to get the hint, always end up saying "please give me a ride, if you don't mind". Realizing that I need to drop a bigger hint, I then started telling him that I would be coming from another direction (i.e. not from home) and it would be so out of my way to pick him up. At this point he often just goes quiet, and we'd have this awkward silence between us, until finally I'd relent and say that I'd give him a ride if he really needs it. It's really getting to the point where I'm a bit annoyed. Even that one time when he ended up driving the both of us to deliver HIS TV for recycling, he initially hinted that we'd be using MY CAR, and I had to come right out to say that I'm not going to transport his huge TV on my leather seats.

He's a 27 year old just like me, has a car but hasn't gotten rid of his N license yet, but honestly, the places that we'd go to are at most 20 min away. Why does he ALWAYS need a ride?! Am I wrong to resent him for this? Maybe I should have just flatly refused instead of dropping hints.

  • Why did my aluminum foil turn light blue and slightly transparent after cooking in oven?

I put a few scallops with sea salt, seasoning, and butter in aluminum foil and cooked them in the oven at 325 degrees. Afterwards, I see that the bottom of the foil has turned light blue and slightly transparent. Why is this and are my scallops still safe to eat?

  • How many wash/rinse cycles do you use?

Just wondering how many regular washing cycles you normally put your moderately dirty clothes through. Right now I typically use a full regular cycle in addition to a second rinse only cycle. But I've heard of people putting their clothes (that aren't that dirty) through TWO complete regular cycles plus an extra rinse cycle just to get rid of any residual detergent.

    Thoughts?

  • How much should I spend on wedding gifts?

A person from my workplace has sent out a batch invitation to everyone at work for his wedding. He's more than just an acquaintance but not quite a close friend, but I've decided to attend since I'm guessing that the reason he's inviting people from work is because he's new to our city and doesn't know very many people.

Anyway, all he's said so far regarding the wedding is that it's at a local above-average hotel, but I have no idea how much per head he's spending, and thus I'm not quite sure how much to spend on his wedding gift. So how do I decide how much to spend?

  • How large should my photos be for MAGIX PhotoStory?

    Hi guys,

I'm going to make a photo slideshow using MAGIX PhotoStory. However, I'm not sure how small I should scale my pictures to (they were shot on a 10mp camera) in order to produce the best quality slideshow. I haven't decided whether the slideshow will be 1080p or 720p or even smaller, but I'm assuming that MAGIX PhotoStory will compress my photos in any event.

So, should I reduce my photos in photoshop to match the output video resolution (e.g. 1920x1080 for 1080p video), or should I import the original photos?

    Thanks!

  • How much can I expect to pay in income tax for my first job?

    Hi guys,

I just got hired for my first ever regular paying job as a photographer! As this is my first ever job, I'm not sure how much I'd pay in taxes on my income in BC, Canada.

Starting in September, I'll be working approximately 30 hours per week, every month, until late May. At $13 per hour, I think I can expect close to 18,000. However, how much taxes will I pay? Do I pay them when I file my tax return in April? I'd appreciate any details about the whole process.

    Thanks!

  • Weird "gurgling" brake noise?

    Hi guys,

First of all, my brakes sound normal virtually all of the time, i.e. quiet. However, I noticed today during traffic jam that when I'm coming to a full stop from a VERY SLOW speed, my front brakes will make this gurgling (not scraping) noise when I depress the brakes to about 90% of the way. It's hard to reproduce, but is almost consistently heard when the traffic is stopping and going and moving at about 10mph.

As soon as the traffic speeds up and I start driving normally again, the sound is gone completely even when I make complete stops at traffic lights.

Has anyone experienced this problem? My brakes were changed just a year ago (barely), and my driving style is average.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Very small crack on plastic housing of furnace blower motor?

    Hi guys,

A furnace tech told me today that there is a very small crack on the plastic housing of my furnace's blower motor, but that no CO was detected as of yet. He recommends changing the motor to a newer model, which has a metal housing, instead.

My furnace is a Rheem and he quoted me $390 installed, including labour. Is this about right or am I being gouged?

    Thanks!

  • Powerpoint fails to play embedded music?

My dad's laptop, which is running Office 2007, refuses to play embedded music in certain powerpoint files that his friends send to him via email. I have tried cleaning up his laptop with Tuneup 2011, but those powerpoint files, which I know for certain comes with music (because they play fine on my desktop), still don't make a sound when opened. What is going on?

  • Can gas furnace's heat exchanger become clogged?

Hi guys! A furnace tech came over to my house today to do routine maintenance on the gas furnace. At the end, he told me that the "heat exchanger" in the furnace was plugged and needed to be cleaned, and that it would cost $250 to do so ($400 if he had to come back another time). This sounded kind of shady and so I declined. My question, can the "heat exchanger" in a gas furnace actually become clogged?

    Thanks!

  • Can I give my landlord 30-days notice in the middle of the month?

I rent a basement unit in Vancouver, BC. In the beginning I signed a six-month tenancy agreement, which ended a few months ago and we both agreed to revert to a month-to-month basis. I'd like to move out now but it's the middle of the month - do I have to wait until the end of the month to give my landlord 30-days notice (i.e. have to pay him another month's worth of rent), or can I give him 30-days notice now and save a few hundred bucks from next month's rent? FYI, I'm moving because the instant-water heater (furnace) for the WHOLE house is located in my unit, and now that he's got the heat turned on in the winter, that thing is on ALL THE TIME - this makes sleeping nearly impossible.

    Thanks!

  • Powerpoint slideshow 2007 won't play embedded wav or mp3 file?

My friends sent me several powerpoint slideshows (pre-packed) that come with embedded wav or mp3 files. The sound plays fine on my laptop, but doesn't play at all when my dad downloaded them onto his laptop. He's running the same version of powerpoint as I am, so how come my laptop plays the sound fine but not his? I've tried embedding my own mp3 file on his laptop into the same slideshow and the sound plays fine.

  • Need help to identify this song?

A DJ was playing songs on this boat cruise - songs from Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Ludacris, Kesha, etc. This song then came up, sung by a chorus? of female singers with a very catchy tune. All I got from the lyrics was something along the lines of "crashing in the light" at the very end of the melody. Anyone know which song I'm talking about?

  • My aunt is wiring my family some money for living expenses - will we have to pay income taxes?

My aunt on my mother's side is wiring my family some money to be used as our living expenses, but she has been told that any amount over $10,000 will be reported by the bank to either the central bank or the Canada Revenue Agency for tax purposes. I have no idea what she is talking about.

I'm assuming that any amount she wires to us is NOT taxable since it's a gift of cash. It's only if we use the gift for investments or to otherwise generate profit that we'd have to declare and pay income tax for. Is this right?

  • Should I get my G35 breaks changed by Infiniti?

I own a 2006 G35 and the breaks need changing. The local Infiniti dealership quoted me $1300 CAD, which includes all breaks + break fluids flush + front wheel alignmentj + taxes. Do you guys:

    1. Think that the price is too high?

    2. Think that I should get someone else to do it? If so, please recommend a shop in the Vancouver/Richmond area (Canada).

    3. Think that the price is high, but that Infiniti breaks last longer and thus are worth the extra bucks?

Thank you so much! I'm a noob when it comes to cars, so I'd appreciate any suggestions!

    Thanks again!

  • What is the duration of the fireworks at Butchart Gardens (Victoria)?

I'm interested in viewing the weekly fireworks display offered at Butchart Gardens (Victoria). However, I'd like to know in advance how long the fireworks last. I'd really hate to have to line up for hours just to see a 15-min display. Thanks!

  • What kind of hairstyle is this called?

Please take a look at the hairstyle in this picture (http://0.tqn.com/d/mensfashion/1/0/h/P/BradPitt.jp... - I'd like to know what it's called. I'm slightly chubby but I'd also like to have a shorter hairstyle that's more comfortable. I really don't want to have to bring in a pic of Brad Pitt to my stylist just to get a haircut. Anyone know what it's called? Thanks!
