Who should pay for trimming the row of trees?

There's a long row of tall trees that belong to my neighbor that is planted right along the border of our two properties (but on his side). They definitely belong to him but recently it has grown over to my side and is actually pushing back my lawn (the parts underneath his trees are now dead). Now, I know I'm well within my rights to trim back those trees back until they're just inside my property (and he has agreed). However, we're not sure who should pay for it (it'll cost $450).

My township's bylaw only says that I have the right to trim them, but says nothing about who should pay for it. They're his trees, after all, and they're planted so close to my property, so shouldn't he have to pay for it?

I live in Langley BC, Canada

Update:

1) It's not a matter of aesthetics - my lawn is literally being pushed back because of his trees (the parts covered are dying). It's weird to say that it's my responsibility when they're his trees. If that's the law, it's wrong and stupid.

2) To those that say I should know that trees grow when I bought the property - what about my neighbor when he chose to plant them there?

3) So if anything that comes over to my property is my responsibility, then I can plant anything on my property and be mindless of what potential damages that it may cause to my neighbor? That's illogical!

He has no obligation to pay. If you want them trimmed, you pay to trim them. That's what the bylaw means by you having the right.

That's pretty much universal law, and it certainly applies in Langley (used to live there, had a similar issue)

anything that comes over onto your property is your responsibility. maybe though you can come to an agreement and go half and half?

    edit:

    1. laws dont have to make sense but whatever is on your property is your responsibility

    2. everyone with common sense knows that trees grow, but the problem is the property line.

    3. your neighbor is not being mindless, you even state that they agree that you can and are "'m well within my rights to trim back those trees back until they're just inside my property". but that also means that if you make any changes to YOUR side of the property that its YOUR responsibility,

i dont know why this is so hard for you to understand.

no the cost is all on you if you want it done- you have the right to trim trees that grow into your property but not the right to make someone else pay for it-

I would imagine the trees were there when you bought the place anyway and you should know that trees grow

If you trim them, you pay for the labor, not the owner of the trees. Often the owner of the trees will offer to pay for half or part of the labor, but he doesn't have to.

They may be his but anything that comes over to your property is yours to trim at your cost.
