Did anyone in America care about Amy Winehouse, or was it only the British that seemed to like her?
She had a great band backing her up, but she was sub par at best. A woman with the same amount of talent could be found at any lounge anywhere in the English speaking world. Was she famous for her singing or was it just because of her different style, her contreversy, her unique looks? She routinely gave bad performances or had her shows canceled because she was too messed up to perform. What was it about her that people liked. I've never met an American that was a fan. It's only the British that seemed to like her. Was it the media that told them that she was so great? I really don't get what the fascination with her was. Please help me understand how Americans can see that she was a garbage performer but the British loved and praised her. Thank you!
Thank you all for your comments. I respect all opinions even if they don't agree with mine. I was just trying to get a consensus from real people out there. The fact is, for me, I have been to many places and have seen many performers; many of them were better than Amy Winehouse. I'm not saying she was bad, she had something, something that attracted people. All I was trying to figure out was why she, amongst all the other unknown great artists out there, singing there hearts out, dedicating their lives to their craft, she happened to get selected by the music industry to become the it girl. Again, I'm not saying she was bad, just that there are so many greater talents out there. How did she break through when they all didn't. I have to believe it is her image that did it. If she looked and acted normal, she would have been a nobody. She was famous because of her image, just like the Hiltons girls and the Kardashian girls. They don't have talent but girls love to follow them and they b
Oops, I ran out of letters. Anyways, like you said Rachel, girls liked Amy because of her look. I guess my point is that it's sad that musicians are respected based on their looks, not their talents.
@Steph: I can go down the street in any major city, pay a 5 dollar cover charge and see people just as talented as Winehouse. I'm not a simpleton; I didn't like her because she was nothing special, musically. She was picked by the the music industry because her image was profitable and could make them money. Everyone in her band had more talent than she had, but she had the look. I guess that's enough for you to like her. If you like someone with sub par talent, wouldn't that make you the simpleton?

I think people liked her because she was a character that lived life in the fast lane, and everyone knew she was going to die young. It's a lot like Lady Gaga people are interested in her more than they are her music. She was a very strange woman, she was a very tragic woman, and she was just a woman. May she rest in peace.

I think you're speaking on behalf of lots of people, and that usually makes the person doing it look like a bit silly. She had Top 10 albums in the US, won 3 of the 4 Big Four Grammy Awards in the same night.
Actually, the British people had mixed views about her before her death - many liked her, others thought she was overrated, others thought she was wasting her talent, plenty mocked her and so on. The press regularly called her an embarrassment. I can find Daily Mail articles dating back less than a month which berate her, while they're lauding her today.
The truth isn't as clear cut as your question claims. Simplifying perceptions the way you are often leads to being perceived as a simpleton. Sorry to be rude, but you're clearly trying to be rude in your question. Also, it's the truth.

The crazy backcombed beehive, cat eyes and tattoos came long after Amy Winehouse enjoyed acclaim and plaudits, so the theory that it was the image that won her success is simply false.
You've also misconstrued what I've said. Although there always seems to be someone itching to be 'controversial' after a music celebrity's death, rubbishing their work and saying it was banal or unimpressive, be it Kurt Cobain or Janis Joplin - everyone's free to like or dislike a particular type of music.
That's not why I called you a simpleton. I called you that a) for the tactlessness on the day after her death, and b) for the lazy, wholly inaccurate simplifications of Amy Winehouse's popularity/notoriety on both sides of the Atlantic.
Source(s): I'm a Camden girl, from near where Amy lived. I liked her a lot during her early years, stopped paying attention for a while, and am sad she never conquered her demons in life. I hope she now has the peace that eluded her in life. RIP. - Will NickelLv 710 years ago
Ms. Winehouse was a fairly competent performer who, absent her psychological issues, could have been so much better. And y'gotta remember, the Brits are a lot like us Yanks in that they almost always root for the underdog. Amy had promise - and folks with a touch of heart know that encouragement is often what brings out the best in people. She tried, she failed. Too bad.

We never listened to her music but heard about her problems on the news from time to time. She will be missed by her loyal fans. Yes the media can make or break a person with sensationalism.
Source(s): TMZ.com right now is saying mom knew she would end up dead. - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

I noticed her when her first album came out, and I bought both of her albums because I didn't figure she would be around very long.
Kind of reminded me of Janis Joplin.
Great music, but like a shooting star, a flash of brilliance and then burned out and gone.

I'm American and I have never heard her sing a song. Yesterday they played a clip on the song Rehab, and I wasn't impressed. I believe she was a wanna be, and that she was destined for exactly what happened.
