  • Any suggestions on things to do or places to see in and around Krabi?

Hey everyone. I'm thinking of going down to Krabi, since I've never been there and I've heard great things about it. Can anyone suggest any must see places or things to do around Krabi province? I'm thinking of being there for 4-5 days. Any recommendations on where to go or stay? I don't need to stay at hotels, guesthouses are fine with me, so about 500 baht a night would be around my accommodation budget. I'm not looking for a luxury visit, just comfortable and clean. Some places with nightlife might also be nice. I also want to see the natural area of Krabi, so I would like to maybe do some kayaking, snorkeling, some hiking, visit an island or two, see some cultural or religious places, etc.

I've got my 10 year old Lonely Planet Thailand book and I've checked out some online sites about Krabi, but I was hoping some folks here could share their experience and recommendations. It would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I'm coming from Bangkok, so I'm thinking of taking the overnight train down to Surat Thani and then the bus to Krabi town. Is this a good idea?

    Thank you!

  • Can I get a Thai driver's license, here in Thailand?

About a month before I left the U.S. to start work in Thailand, I got stopped at a police checkpoint after leaving a wedding party. The police stopped every car. I made the stupid mistake to admit that I had a couple of drinks at the party, although at this point I was sober. Anyways, they took me in for the night, took my license, gave me a temporary restricted license, and I was able to drive home the next morning. The judge believed I was sober because my blood alcohol was under the legal limit, which meant I was driving legally. But because the police in California are ruthless, corrupt, and get points for arrests(partly because they are trying to save their jobs amongst all the budget cuts), they said I did not pass the sobriety tests. Like I said, the judge believed I was ok and reduced the sentence to the lowest punishment that he can do legally, which is called a "wet wreckless." Basically that means that I had been drinking, but was not drunk or was a hazard. Regardless, my driver's license was taken away. The only way to get it back is to take a three month drinking and driving class. But because my job in Thailand started in less than one month, I could not take the class and thus do not have my U.S. driver's license. The only way I can get it back is to take time off from work, fly back to the U.S. for the three month class, fly back to Thailand, and then receive my license in the mail. With my job duties here, this is almost near impossible. I can't take a three month "vacation" to go to the U.S. to take care of business.

Is there some way I can take a course or a test here in Thailand to get a valid Thai driver's license?

If you need more info in order to answer, just ask and I'll try to provide it.

    Thank you.

Yeah, kind of embarrassing to admit, but I want to be able to drive here...legally.

  • Why can't I upload a picture to use on my yahoo profiles?

I play yahoo fantasy sports. I'm trying to upload a picture to use on my team profile. I have been able to upload pictures before, but I can't this time. From my profile page, I click on "Change Image." Then I click on "Add Photo." Then I click on the "Browse" button and select the image from my computer. Then I click on the "Upload" button. Then I crop the image to my liking and then click on the "Crop" button. Then, when it asks me to select an image to use on my profile, that image is not there. I've been trying to do this several times.

I've tried several different jpg images, all within the size requirements, but without success.

If it didn't meet the format and size requirements, it would not allow me to proceed at all. Does anyone know why the image doesn't actually show up after I upload it and crop it?

    Thank you.

  • Why is the entire staff at California Wow fitness centers in Bangkok rude to foreigners?

I am a foreigner that works out at California Wow fitness in Bangkok. About 99% of the members are Thai, but I know some of the other foreigners that work out there. After chatting with them, we've realized that we all have noticed the same thing; the staff is rude to all of us.

A list of some of our observations:

The staff at reception will smile and chat with Thai members. They will do neither with us foreigners.

The staff on the floor will smile and chat with Thai members. They will do neither with us foreigners.

The staff on the floor will give exercise advice to Thai members. They won't do that for foreigners.

The staff on the floor will assist Thai members during exercises. They won't do that for foreigners.

And don't think that it's because they don't speak English. When I first went in to inquire about a membership and take a look around, many of them seemed quite friendly and spoke English very well. On my first day of fitness, a staff member showed me exercises, gave me advice, took my biometrics(height, weight, body fat index, etc.) He was very friendly. After that, he tried to sell me a personal trainer package. I was apprehensive so another friendly guy with great English skill joined him, but I never bought the package. I see these two regularly, but they've never since said "hello." This same story was confirmed with the other foreigners I've talked to.

But don't get me wrong. Other Thai members at the club are very nice and friendly, smile and say hello. And some offer to assist or provide workout tips. So it's not Thais in general, it's the Thai staff. Does anyone know enough about Thai business culture to understand why the Thai staff, but not Thai members, are rude to foreigners? Could it be that they want to keep the club as Thai as can be, and discourage foreigners from working out there? I just don't get it. Like I said, the other foreigners I know there have noticed the same thing, so it's not just me. At first I thought it might be just me, but they all say the same things.

    Any ideas?

  • Why is it illegal(or forbidden) for certain stores in Thailand to sell alcohol between 2pm and 5pm?

This law or rule doesn't apply to all establishments, but it does for many. This seems silly to me, especially when they are allowed to sell alcohol before 2pm. Why is it ok to sell(or buy) alcohol in the late morning to early afternoon, but once it becomes late afternoon, it's not ok?

  • Dream interpretation please.?

Recently I've been having these dreams where my teeth get all loose. Then I start to pull gently on them but they come right out. Soon enough I'm holding more than half of my teeth in my hands. I'm pretty sure that's about the time I wake up. Even in my dream, I'm wishing that it is just a dream but realize(in my dream) that it's real. Then I wake up and think, wow, that seemed so real. It was so real that I questioned whether or not it was a dream, in my dream.

Has anyone had a similar dream? Is there an interpretation for this kind of dream? FYI, I still have all my teeth in real life, and they are quite healthy.

    Thank you in advance!

  • If you are a Christian and ask which god is the true god, isn't that blasphemous?

Christians are supposed to believe in only one god. If they are asking which god is the true god, then that means they believe in more than one. You better hope that your favorite god doesn't find out you've been asking about other gods. I've heard that your god is quite the jealous one. Watch out, he might get ya!

  • What is the most annoying commercial on Thailand's TAN network?

For me, it's actually a toss up between the commercials for "Tales of a Big City" and "The Travel Show."

  • Why is it not impolite for Thai people to pick their noses and flick boogers in public?

Thai people are generally very clean and proper people. Again, generally they are. Why is it culturally acceptable to publicly stick their fingers, knuckle deep into each nostril while turning and churning until they get all their boogers onto their fingers and then proceed to flick these boogers off their fingers in any direction? And of course they like to examine each finding before it gets flicked off.

I'm not really against it. Heck, it allows me to do the same thing if I choose. It just seems odd that it's ok to publicly remove solidified bodily fluids from a pair of orifices with uncovered fingers and disperse them into the air or onto public surfaces, often in the direction of people or in the vicinity of food.

I know that Chinese people have no problems ripping huge farts in public with no fear of embarrassment, so maybe it's just one of life's little mysteries.

Any insight into this? Thank you!

  • Are you an American or European living in Thailand? What do you like to cook?

I'm an American living in Thailand and I like trying to cook Thai food with local ingredients. Any other western people living here and like to cook Thai food? What are your favorite things to cook? Do you stick to traditional recipes or do you mix it up?

  • Is Tai Orathai single?

She's hot, classy, and has a great voice. Based on her songs, I'm guessing she's had some bad experiences in relationships. I wonder if she'd go for a farang.

  • Why is Jenny McCarthy always trending, according to Yahoo?

Every time I'm on Yahoo and I look at the top of the page, it says, "Trending: Jenny McCarthy." The last time there was anything interesting going on with her was when she was co-hosting "Remote Control" on MTV in the 90's. Seriously, why is she trending all the time in Yahoo? WTF?

  • Did anyone in America care about Amy Winehouse, or was it only the British that seemed to like her?

She had a great band backing her up, but she was sub par at best. A woman with the same amount of talent could be found at any lounge anywhere in the English speaking world. Was she famous for her singing or was it just because of her different style, her contreversy, her unique looks? She routinely gave bad performances or had her shows canceled because she was too messed up to perform. What was it about her that people liked. I've never met an American that was a fan. It's only the British that seemed to like her. Was it the media that told them that she was so great? I really don't get what the fascination with her was. Please help me understand how Americans can see that she was a garbage performer but the British loved and praised her. Thank you!

  • Why are there so many songs on Youtube that can't be added and played in my playlists?

I've added all these songs to a playlist on my Youtube account but they can't be viewed in my playlist. I can search for the song and play it, but it gets skipped in my playlist. What is up with that? I've added all these great songs (in my opinion) to a playlist but half of them get skipped and say, "SME restricts playback of this video in playlists. Watch this video in a stand-alone player. Sorry about that."

I just want to kick back and listen and watch to all these videos.

You tube can take its "Sorry about that" and shove it up its asss!

  • What's the cheapest way to extend my Visa another 30 days?

Until I finish my TEFL teaching certificate and get a teaching job and a work permit, I need to keep renewing my Visa here in Thailand by crossing the border and coming back in. Land border crossings only extend my Visa 15 days, but flying into Thailand will extend it for 30 days. Last time I extended my Visa, I worked my way up north from Bangkok by bus up into Laos, and then flew back into Bangkok from Vientiane for an extra 30 days. Fun enough trip, but I don't want to keep doing it that way, and traveling all the way to the border to walk across and back in for an extra 15 days is totally inefficient. Does anyone know the cheapest/best airlines and which round trip routes leaving Thailand are the cheapest, starting from and returning to Bangkok?

And please try to refrain from telling me what I should have done before I left my country in the first place. I already know I dropped the ball.

    Thank you!

  • When will Adam Sandler portray Bob Dylan in a movie?

Watch the video from the link below. Check out Bob Dylan and tell me he doesn't look like Adam Sandler. The similarities are striking. I mean, hey, they both sing and play guitar. An autobiographical movie of Bob Dylan is inevitable. Who else would be a better fit for the roll?

  • What do Thai people believe was the reason for the increased police presence during the general election?

During last weekend's general election in Thailand, alcohol sales were banned throughout the country and extra police were brought into Bangkok. What are peoples' opinions as to why extra police were brought in. I am particularly interested in the opinion of Thai people. But of course, anyone's opinion is welcome.
