Why is it not impolite for Thai people to pick their noses and flick boogers in public?

Thai people are generally very clean and proper people. Again, generally they are. Why is it culturally acceptable to publicly stick their fingers, knuckle deep into each nostril while turning and churning until they get all their boogers onto their fingers and then proceed to flick these boogers off their fingers in any direction? And of course they like to examine each finding before it gets flicked off.

I'm not really against it. Heck, it allows me to do the same thing if I choose. It just seems odd that it's ok to publicly remove solidified bodily fluids from a pair of orifices with uncovered fingers and disperse them into the air or onto public surfaces, often in the direction of people or in the vicinity of food.

I know that Chinese people have no problems ripping huge farts in public with no fear of embarrassment, so maybe it's just one of life's little mysteries.

Any insight into this? Thank you!

Update:

@Michael: Thanks for your response! I guess I didn't see that other post on yahoo. It was interesting to see all those opinions, especially since it was an Asian-American asking why Asians do this. I also thought it was funny that people accused him of being racist. And many missed his point entirely. He never said other races don't do it, they just don't do it openly in public places as much as Asians do. Of course I have seen Americans do it publicly, but it's not nearly as frequent as I see it in Thailand. My point is that when I see Americans do it, they are usually trying to hide the fact, in Thailand there is apparently no stigma attached. And interesting Wikipedia article. I like Jane Stephenson's comparison of boogers to vaccines. It makes sense; dead, dried germs are found in boogers and if you ingest them, your body can create antibodies from them. But of course I wasn't talking about eating boogers, I was talking about picking and flicking.

Hmmm, it's 7:30, dinner time!

Update 2:

@mgan: That's the most ironic thing I've read all day, or several days for that matter.

Update 3:

@IceCube: Ok, truth be told, I don't actually know if it is considered polite or impolite. I guess I see it so regularly that I assume that it's not considered impolite. And yes, picking the nose does clear the nasal air passage, which is a healthy and natural thing to do. So is going #2 and clearing the anal passage. But I'm sure it wouldn't be polite to wipe the *** and flick that stuff around the room. But you are correct, boogers are probably the least nasty of the bodily wastes. If people are going to flick bodily waste around, I guess I would prefer it to be boogers. It could be worse!

Last I checked, it wasn't that polite picking noses in public, especially if those noses are not your own. In any case, I think picking noses is one way to clean the passage of your air intake, and cleaning parts of your body should also be considered hygiene. Just that cleaning the various parts of the body in public isn't considered polite in many cultures, and that included Thai.

I mean try picking your ears, rectum, or genital organ in public in Thailand, and people will watch with disapproving eyes. I mean noses are the least of the problem.

What's equally amazing is that they consider it rude to blow your nose in public...TIT!
