Any suggestions on things to do or places to see in and around Krabi?
Hey everyone. I'm thinking of going down to Krabi, since I've never been there and I've heard great things about it. Can anyone suggest any must see places or things to do around Krabi province? I'm thinking of being there for 4-5 days. Any recommendations on where to go or stay? I don't need to stay at hotels, guesthouses are fine with me, so about 500 baht a night would be around my accommodation budget. I'm not looking for a luxury visit, just comfortable and clean. Some places with nightlife might also be nice. I also want to see the natural area of Krabi, so I would like to maybe do some kayaking, snorkeling, some hiking, visit an island or two, see some cultural or religious places, etc.
I've got my 10 year old Lonely Planet Thailand book and I've checked out some online sites about Krabi, but I was hoping some folks here could share their experience and recommendations. It would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'm coming from Bangkok, so I'm thinking of taking the overnight train down to Surat Thani and then the bus to Krabi town. Is this a good idea?
Thank you!
@Spanky: Thanks! How did you know I would find that interesting? I actually used to work in Hawaii studying the endangered honeycreepers on the big island. So that was right up my alley. Thanks.
@Pete O:Thanks for your ideas. Krabi is quite large so I'll definitely want to spend about a week there. Although, I am still considering if I want to go soon or wait until around November when the weather and water clarity improve. Of course that's when the crowds arrive and the prices go up. Pros and cons at any time. Decisions decisions. Thanks.

I have been to Krabi on 5 occasions and found the place is great for a holiday. Krabi is a big province and there are many places to stay.
The most popular place is AoNang beach which is about 20 minutes from Krabi town. There is plenty of places to stay, go to www.asiarooms.com or to www.agoda.com.
From AoNang you can easily get to the Phi Phi Islands and a number of great beaches. If you are into diving it is excellent.
Further south is the islands of Ko Lanta where there is plenty of cheap accommodation places.
I tried the train and bus but have found that you can fly to Krabi with AirAsia for about $20 offpeak and this is not much more than the train and bus fare.

I think they thought the Gurney Pitta was extinct for about 50 years or so until re-discovered in Krabi - and later in Burma too... I am not a birder, but thought that this was a cool story and the park looks spectacular in the pictures in this link below - been to Krabi but not to this park - have fun.
