Would you want to be one of the first people to set foot on Mars if it meant that you could never return?
There is much international cooperation between several space agencies which are working together to put a man on Mars:

It is expected to cost between 6 and 8 billion dollars. There are apparently resources on Mars which mean that potential colonists could live out their lives there. However they would never be able to return to Earth. As it would cost an insane amount of money to do that, and may not even be technically feasible for a long time.
If this happens it will be a small number of people who will be sent there. The countries involved in this endeavor have a combined population of about 3 billion people; so it is likely they will be able to find some people willing to do this. Would you choose to be one of these people, who go down in history as the first to set foot on the red planet; and if so why or why not? And you obviously wouldn't have the option of traveling there when you are very old.
Silly question? Which that's what their planning, and their is a source which supports this.

This is a silly question. No-one in his or her right mind would want to go to Mars knowing they would not be able to return. They would not send insane people, so end of question.

It depends what kind of facilities I would have to live in after-wards.---And if other people come along later. A nice base, with picture window views of the landscape, Sattelite TV, plenty of food, an oppurtunity to explore, ---I could live with that.
Not worth living in a 'tin can" and having to die when the oxygen ran out situation though.

the next manned space mission will probably be an asteroid rendezvous. this doesn,t involve complex landing craft. a phobos mission could be in the cards in 15 years. the landing requirements would be minimal. i think any mars mission would need nuclear propulsion to shorten mission time.

Not silly.
My family is everything, but if I were to lose them, yes, I’d be willing to do that trip.
And for a “kid” whose been passionate about space since knee-high to an Emperor Penguin, it would be the best way to end.
