Installing Linux mint?

I've managed to boot linux from a flash drive but when I start it not only do I have to use comparability mode but it loads a black and white list (it looks like command prompt) spouts a funny quote from an animal and then prints "mint@mint ~$ _" what do I do now?

Update:

If I click "Start Linux" my machine freezes

init 5 returns "init: need to be root

Your being booted into a terminal (runlevel 3), why won't it start normally? try typing init 5 at the prompt if it won't load up post the results.
