Why my Mercury Villager looses power and cuts off.?

It cut off and there was a smell of rubber and smoke came out from under the hood. There was no indication of water in the oil, nor were any belts broken. Now we've put plugs in it and it runs better but cut off going round a corner. Car has many miles on it.

The smell of rubber is an indication of an overheated hose. The smoke is usually a sign of oil burning. I'd start with flushing the entire coolant system, including the heater core, and fill it with 50/50 Anti Freeze and water. Beyond that , you might be putting too much money into this.
