Firefox 4, now Firefox 5 then Firefox 6+7+8?!!?

Question

I just found out about the expected beta versions about Firefox. WTF?

I was okay with Firefox 4 coming out, even though I was used to version 3.6x now I just found out that Mozilla is developing new versions of the Firefox browser. I mean really?! Firefox 4 only got 1 major update, 1! Now 5 has come out not too long ago and three new versions are expected to come out within this year and early next year.

Are Mozilla expecting to challenge IE and Chrome because of the amount of stable releases that they have? IE9/Chrome12/Firefox??

People that I know seem to have this understanding that if the version has a higher number then it's better than a lower number (FF5 VS IE9 VS Chrome12). Is this what Mozilla is getting at?

They're just trying to keep up with their competitors. I don't blame them for trying to stop their product from becoming outdated compared to the other major browsers.

They completely changed their course and with each major update they will release a new version number. They found out psychologically people think the higher the number the more likely they will take that browser. Normally they waited for many massive updates before going to the next phase. Infact they work on 3 versions ahead, so already their is work on firefox 7 as we speak.
