What is a Community? How do they function? What is the advantage of this kind of living?

Does this life style really works? I got to know people who were very enthusiastic about it and they started their own community, but gave up after soon... There are others that exist since many years, but what happens there? Is it a creative life or just more comfortable? What is the philosophy?

Update:

I have ask now a new question: What is your experience living in an 'Intentional Community?

OMG I am laughing so hard. I live in a shelter and that what they call it :"community living".

It's a community that is told not to steal but the thieves aren't evicted or even punished, where fighters get thrown out only if the reporter who gets hit does too, a community where people are regularly called "welfare trash, white trash, n**ger, and schizi". A community that has is expected to act as unpaid nurses aides to two women approaching 100 who are fecal and urinally incontinent and unable to fix their own dinner...(they're the ones who call us names, hour after hour). A community where reporting problems ALWAYS results in retaliation...where residents pay for their housing for a building that takes in close to a half million (possibly more) in federal funding every year, where residents openly smoke in defiance of law. Oh, and a community that has its bedroom windows forced closed during a heat wave...why? Because someone complained about the heat...in the living room. A community that has done nothing but disparage and disillusion me from day one. I've had my car taken because staff were given the free parking spaces...I've had hundreds of dollars taken from my room, once (allegedly) by staff (as reported by my neighbor who is close to 80 and very honest). That money was to be for my best friend's Christmas present...she died the next summer so I never did get to give her anything for her last christmas on Earth.

And for all my struggles, (I came here with NOTHING but the clothes on my back) I get to be sniffed at, looked down upon, and told "You're homeless you have no right to be angry".. Yea, no RIGHT...to be ANYTHING..such as ALIVE AT ALL..with a brain, to boot.

Community living? Please God, let me win the lottery, I'm done.

I think, Community means Group of People Living together. If they Live with Understanding and Helping with Each other they will Live Comfortably and Harmoniously for Long duration with Happy. But, If they have EGO and Non Cooperative with Each other, they can not Live Harmoniously with Long duration, they will Separate.
