Can I Join the Coast Guard if I have tattoos?

I have two tattoos on my left forearm that would be visible in a short-sleeved uniform. One of the tattoos is a kanji character for "eagle" and the other is a fouled anchor. I also have one on my left shoulder blade of a phoenix. Would these tattoos disqualify me from enlistment?

You see, I already read that answer, and it was 3 years ago so I wanted to get updated regs. Not to mention, I don't have a tattoo on my wrist. FAIL, n.n.

What you describe should be fine.

You can read the official (current) USCG policy here:

    Good luck!

Tattoo policies for each individual branch of the military are slightly different, and constantly changing. I know the Army, especially, is a lot more lax on tattoos due to the fact that they need more recruits. The Navy and Coast Guard tend to be a little more strict since they aren't recruiting quite as fervently as the other branches. Of course they will not allow any offensive/vulgar/profane tattoos...this should go without saying. But typically, if your tattoo(s) are not offensive in any way, it's easier for them to ignore. Now, when it comes to exposed areas, it gets a little tricky. You are not allowed to have any tattoos on your face, neck, or hands, period. As far as areas on your arms and legs that will show in uniform, as long as it covers no more than 25% of the exposed area on an individual limb, it is typically allowed. Just remember, this is the military. If they decide they don't like your tattoo for any reason, they can deny you. But these days it's not very likely to be turned away for a tattoo, unless it is imprudent in some way.

It will depend on the subject matter, and the one on your wrist may be disqualifying. The only way to find out is to contact your local recruiting office - do a prescreen to make sure nothing else will dq you - then you will probably need to go in to have your tattoo checked or send them a digital photo.

depends this is mostly at the discression of a higher ranked official or recruiter. they highly frown upon sleeve and visible tattoos as long as they are not big and flashy you should be fine.
