  • Does the military obtain medical records during the enlistment process?

I am interested in enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. I have a history of eczema (after age 12). If this information was left off of my enlistment application, would the Marine Corps obtain my medical records to verify the information?

  • Guitar pick thickness?

've not played guitar since high school (five years now) and I've been getting back into it recently. As I've been looking at getting appropriate accessories (new strings, picks, etc). I realized that I had no idea why certain pick thicknesses would or would not be appropriate. Can anyone make a recommendation?

I typically play blues and rock rhythm guitar, though occasionally lead, if that changes your advice.

  • When making left turns on my bicycle, should I use the left turn lane or the cross walk?

I've recently begun to ride my bicycle to work 2-3 days a week. There are a couple of stretches of bike paths on my route to work, as well as less-busy, neighborhood streets that I use. However, there is a short stretch of a main road that I have to use which ends up necessitating a left turn.

In order to make this turn, I have to move over two lanes to get into the left turn lane, which, although legal, is often risky given how busy this roadway is. Given that I am more in the beginning levels of cycling, I am not quite comfortable with this, particularly during rush hours.

The alternative is to stay in the right lane until the intersection, and cross the street in the pedestrian crosswalk.

  • I'm an American; tartans fr my wedding?

I am an American currently planning my wedding and, as my fiancee and I are both Scot-Irish (her name is Doyle, my mother's maiden name is O'Coffey), we have decided that my groomsmen and I will wear Highland attire. We would also like for each of the men to wear a tartan that is significant to them, even if they are not Scottish or Irish; for example, my German friend who is a sailor will probably wear the popular US Navy tartan, and my best man from California will wear the California state tartan.

My question is this: given that my fiancee's family name is Doyle--from the Gaelic "Ó Dubhghaill"--would it be appropriate for her brother (one of my groomsmen) and her father to wear the MacDougal or MacDowell tartan, given that those clan names are derived from Ó Dubhghaill as well, or should her family wear--as I will be--the Irish county tartan for where our families are from, as is the custom for Irishmen?

  • Is it appropriate to wear a ceremonial sword with a kilt?

I am wearing a traditional highland ensemble to a formal event and I am curious as to whether or not it is appropriate to wear a ceremonial saber with my outfit; if I were to be attending this event wearing trousers instead of a kilt, I would be wearing the sword.

So, does the sword go against the grain of the highland ensemble and should I go without it? Or will it be appropriate?

  • How do you categorize your wines?

I've just started to collect wines. A few months ago, an aunt of mine who was a collector passed away and I received several cases of her wines--almost all were different appellations, vintages, etc. So, I bought a wine rack and I keep these wines--plus a few that I have purchased myself, around sixty bottles in all--in a small, cool closet in my basement.

At this point,I've got it split between reds and whites, and I can tell which wine is which by a quick glance, but I plan on expanding my collection a lot in the next few years, so I'm curious, what is the most efficient (or most common) way to categorize wines?

  • Can I Join the Coast Guard if I have tattoos?

I have two tattoos on my left forearm that would be visible in a short-sleeved uniform. One of the tattoos is a kanji character for "eagle" and the other is a fouled anchor. I also have one on my left shoulder blade of a phoenix. Would these tattoos disqualify me from enlistment?

  • Is it legal for my parents to itemize my receipts? Or my tuition?

I'm twenty years old. For the past couple of years on my tax returns, I've taken a standard deduction, and I've not saved most of my receipts, if any at all. This year, I have. I go to school in addition to working and I live at home, and my parents claim me as a dependent. My father has told me that if I do still decide to take a standard deduction, I should give him my receipts so that he may itemize the sales tax. Is this a violation of tax law? If so, what statute, and would I be a party to violating the statute because I gave him the receipts?

Also, last year, because I selected that I was being claimed as a dependent on my 1040 E-Z, I was not able to claim the college tuition that I had paid myself. Again, my father has told me that since I am his dependent, he is eligible to claim it. Is this in violation of any tax statute, and which one(s)?

  • How do I calculate capital gains?

I started trading stocks and ETFs about six months ago. About six days ago, I sold some of my stock for the first time. I am wondering, when calculating capital gains for tax purposes, are commissions and fees taken into account using the net proceeds, or do I calculate the gain using the gross amount the sale was for?

Are the wooden clogs--geta sandals--worn by Samurai Jack actually men's footwear? Or is that a bit of creative license?

  • What color socks should be worn with jeans?

So, I work at a high end men's clothing retailer. For a long time, we've simply carried men's formal, business, and business casual wear (i.e. tuxedos, suits, sport coats, dress pants, etc.). Recently we've started to carry more casual clothes, including blue jeans. With suits and dress pants, we recommend that gentlemen match their socks to their trouser color--navy suit, navy socks, and so on. But customers who purchase jeans have been asking what color socks to wear with them.

I generally wear dark gray socks with my jeans, so that's what I pass along to them. Have I been involved in a conspiracy to committ a fashion faux pas?

  • What is a "concealment charge?"?

I took a phone call earlier this evening from what I assume was a collection agency. The person asked to speak to my brother--who lives with me--and when I informed them that he wasn't home, they asked that I have him call them back and that if he didn't do so soon, they would press concealment charges.

I live in Illinois. What is a "concealment charge" in regards to debt collection?
