I believe in term limits. Who's with me?

Term limits are set for the president. That's it. There are no term limits for governors, mayors, city council, Congressmen (I refuse to be politically correct and say the gender neutral B.S. Term), or Senators.

Why?

With term limits we would be plagued by the life long law makers who eventually may become corrupt. We wouldn't have as much to worry about the special interest groups or the lobbyists because hey, with a term limit of four years whats the point of bribing me with a campaign contribution on year number four? We would constantly have new members cycling into the law making seats. Pros? Cons?

Update:

@TAT Well said sir, I can compromise with you on that. But, as a side note, I think the 'crazy republican radio guy' was right in his comment on Monday.

It is bogus and BS for the POTUS to demand that the Speaker of the House and the Majority Leader of the Senate to come at his Beck and Call because the three branches of the US Government are supposed to be EQUAL.

The Congress and the Senate have just as much power as the President. The President can not pass laws without Congress and Senates approval. The President can not raise taxes without approval. The president can give an executive order, but the congress can over rule the order. It has been done twice before once in 1952 against Truman, and once against Bill Clinton.

Update 2:

@J.T. While I agree with what you are saying but I'll ask this, If it's not fair to have term limits on the Congress or the Senate, then why is it fair to have term limits on the President? And don't say because the president is supreme. He's not, he still has to contend with the other two branches. (Read added details above)

    So do I.

I want an amendment that sets real term limits. Like you said, just like the president can't run again after two terms, then that's how it should be for our Congressional members.

That's what we need to be calling them about. Getting an amendment to limit their time in Congress to two terms and no more.

The difference with is that congress has mulitple people who run 1 branch of gov. but the president is just a single person running a branch of gov., the fear was that after FDR we could have gotten a man who would end up like a dictator (like in eygpt) and run the country the way he likes.

The idea is the elected official has to do a good job or the people wont vote for him.

After W was re-elected he figured that At the end of the next term I have to retire, cause I can't run a 3rd time. Cheney told him because of his bad heart and other health problems he will retire at the end of the term too. Then he said he said "we don't need the voters to help us anymore, so from now on let's really **** them over!"

I support term limits 100%! I would NEVER vote for an incumbent! I'm glad that there are laws that require politicians to come up for re-election on regular basis so we can decide whether or not to keep them in office! I can't imagine, especially now, how any member of Congress can have a chance at re-election. In a democracy, people get the government they deserve. Pure and simple. In fact, I resent the fact that the President is relegated to only two terms. In the event we ever find a capable person of leading the country it will be a shame that they will no longer be able to serve for a totally arbitrary reason. Clearly it is a failure of the people that incompetents continue to get re-elected. BTW, in order for term limits to be instituted it would require support from the very people benefiting most from the current status. Good luck with that.

Look. Some districts have consistently voted in their Senators and Representatives because their congress people have been successful and effective in representing them and protecting their regional interests. What kind of system are you proposing that takes away the right of Americans to vote for the candidate of their choice?? If the elections are fair and Americans want to repeatedly vote a Congressman or Congresswoman in to office then they should have the right to do so. They also have the right to vote a Congressperson OUT of office during elections. I've only heard Republican propose the idea that people voting need to be told who to vote for..... More government interference and imposition into our lives.

Here is my only problem with term limits: If I believe a politician has done a good job representing my district, why can I not vote for him as long as he is willing to serve. The position is not as powerful as POTUS. I don't like the thought of career politicians but I also don't like the thought of having to vote for someone who is not as qualified or as representative of my district. Four years is not long to get things done. I would rather at least a six year term or maybe an 8 year term with the possibility of recall.

I agree, and I'd start with the Judicial system and then got to the rest. 4 sounds about right, no more than 6 for judges, 4 for congress. Now if it would only happen.
