car seat laws when friends giving you a lift for a short journey?

I know its not a legal requirement in a taxi for a child to be in a car seat but i have no clue what the rules are for friends.

If a friend was to pick you up and you were only going to be in the car for roughly 10 mins does your child legally have to be in a car seat? Or can they sit on your knee with the seatbelt on them ( this is what the local taxi rank makes you do)

If you are referring to UK law then your child MUST be in the correct child restraint if they are being given a lift by a friend no matter how short the journey. This does however, depend on the size of your child. If they are of a size that they would have to be in a child restraint in your own vehicle, then that also applies when in any other car...

child between you and the seat belt ==death for child in collision. Always use safety seats, or you may regret it for a long time.
