Are any of these signs that he likes me?
There is a guy at my school who I don't really know personally and I'm just wondering how I can tell from a distance if he likes me. I have no idea if he is gay, straight or bi although I think he shaves his legs if that helps at all. I walked past him once and I'm 90% sure he was smiling. It wasn't obvious but more like he was smiling to himself. Then a couple of other times I've walked by and he sees me and looks startled, kind of like I suprise him. I also saw him look at me from a distance. Other times though he acts like he doesn't notice me at all. I can't really be around him more because he isn't in my year. What are some signs that a guy might like you?

In a few years it will get easier as your gaydar gets better - you'll just know if a guy is gay. In the meantime, it helps to know that there's natural chemistry: boy/boy, boy/girl, girl/girl, etc. - 99% of the time if you are interested in someone, they feel the same thing.
Yes, you've got to dream-up some way to make "contact" with him without being too weird about it - a smile and looking glad to see someone is a good start.

He will want to make conversation with you at any opportunity.
First, you need to introduce yourself to him, so you are not looking from a distance.
After talking with him, you will know if you can make a move, or if you will just be friends.
The fact that he is checking you out, smiling at you, that is a good sign that he is interested.
The times you think he acts like he doesn't notice you, is most likely due to the fact you are
looking at him from a distance. You need to be more friendly. Ask him out for a coffee,
Ice Cream, etc., then you two can talk.

These aren't signs that a guy likes you. When you like someone, or find interest in them, you find reasons focus on their every move. So when you're seeing this guy staring or possibly smiling, you immediately want to make the connection that he's doing so because he sees you. You don't know the guy, and so you're limited on information to make any sort of assumption. If you really want to know, get into stalker mode, find his name in the year book, then Facebook search him!

Try dropping your books right in front of him if helps you it either means he's nice or he likes you which will lead to conversation which you should be able to get a vibe to see if he's into your not.
If he doesn't help you pick up your books it means he's douche bag and you want nothing to do with him.
