Honey bees either nest in a hive set up by a beekeeper or in cavities of trees.Honey bees are smooth and have a golden yellow color with darker golden brown stripes

Bumble bees nest in the ground in tunnels made by other insects. Bumble bees are fuzzy and larger than honey bees. They have bright yellow with black stripes.

Yellow jackets make their home underground too especially if there is rotting wood. Their bodies tend to be a bit longer than honey bees and they have brighter yellow markings than honey bees.A lot of people mistake them for honey bees. I would say this is probably what you are seeing. Because it is in an area near your pool, you would be wise to get some wasp killer and spray the nest. As long as you don't disturb them they are fine but disturb the nest in any way and they will attack in numbers. Be well protected when you spray and stand well back. Wasp killer will send our a long spray so there is no need to go that close

I'm not sure about honey bees, try a general internet search on honey bee nests for that one.

In my area, if we find bees nesting in the ground they are yellow jackets. If this is near where people go, I'd say it should be taken care of. They are a danger to people as well as pets, and if it is yellow jackets they will also cause problems any time anyone has food around.

    Where Do Honey Bees Live

No, honey bees generally don't nest under ground. They will congregate where ever the queen is though.

What a honey bee looks like

Bumble bees often nest in the ground.

Generally a bumble bee looks like a fat/fluffy honey bee.

Wasps and yellow jackets often nest in the ground too. These dudes are nasty.

If you have yellow jackets nesting around your pool, I would go to a hardware store and get something to exterminate them.

Ground nesting bees arent' honey bees, orchard bees or wasps. Call a local beekeeper by asking your neighbors, the newspaper in your area, or a county extension agent near you out of the phone book. He will smoke them out, then dig them out humanely without you having to put you or your family at risk physically. Yes this is dangerous.

Skunks love to eat ground nesting bees, but not all at once!

Yeah, if you don't have training as an apiarist you don't want to mess with a bee swarm. The best thing to do is either leave them alone or call your local Vector Control or Dept. of Agriculture and get a referal to a reputable apiarist (bee keeper) to come and transfer the hive to a working apiary.

Not usually, you will most commonly find them in a tree or bird box, or an abandoned building, outhouse. Bumble bees live most commonly in little holes they dig or find. They live alone.
