We each gave her a dose of motrin for her temp and didn't realize it.?

my daughter weighs between 40 and 50lbs, but is under age (4-5) on the motrin bottle. We were giving her the dosage based on age (1tsp. which is for someone who weighs 25 lbs). Not realizing my husband had given her some (1tsp) when I was in the shower- I gave her 1tsp when I got out. So she had 2tsp. Do we need to call poison control? I know the hospital and dr always dose by weight and not age- so since it shows 2 tsp based on her weight- shouldn't that be ok?

Update:

thanks for advice- called the er- and because of her weight she is fine- they said it would take a much higher dose for her to OD on motrin anyways- so it is fine. Normally we write down medicines, just for this reason- however I have been sick in bed for 2 days and not feeling so well myself- so I wasn't even thinking straight and did it. No excuse, I know- but really, i'm not a horrible parent. =(

No, she's fine. I've been in that situation before except I had some peroxide in a little brown bottle and some children's meds in a little brown bottle. Guess which one I gave my poor kid??

You go by weight, the age means nothing any more so if she weighs the weight for 2 then 2 is the dose that is ok to give. So she is fine. Always go by weight never by age. Going by age is how kids get overdosed and underdosed.

I agree with the first answer you got. I'd just like to add...this propbably happens to a lot of people, I'm pretty sure I remember it happening to us when our kids were small. We learned to always check before giving any medicine because, like in your case, the child might not just happen to have a high enough weight to handle the doses given.

Just call your local ER and speak with the triage nurse, you should speak to someone with real medical knowledge to be safe.
