What are the rear axle specs for 1998 Silverado Z71 w/off road package?
The differential is making a grinding noise. The plug is stripped I couldn’t turn it, so I decided to replace the cover with one that has a plug on it. There are two kinds of differential: 8.5 and 8.625 ring gear. The cover is so rusty…there are no visible numbers, and I couldn’t find the service tag.
I’m trying to figure out which differential I have so I can order the cover for it. All I know is that I have 3.73 gears ratio and 10 bolt cover. Does anyone know the ring gear specs or where to find them?

Phone your local GM dealer. They can decode the ser. # and give you the correct size, and ratio. Have your vin ready .
