East Africa famine: what can we do to help?
East Africa is undergoing a massive famine. Tens of thousands of starving Somalis have flooded Mogadishu refugee camps in search of food. Hundreds are dying each day. Somalia is undergoing East Africa's worst drought in 60 years, and ruling militants are blocking some of the aid from western Countries.
What can we do to help feed those people right now? What might be a long-term solution?

Hello young one is happy to answer your question.
There are many things we can do to help Africans.
First stop the corruption of politicians.
Secondly end prejudice.
Apparently the crown in Africa did was make it worse.
For most people can not remember most of Africa Cup.
The governments of each country should help the economy stable country in need.
But politicians only look to their own pocket.

There is very little that outsiders can do except to feed as many as possible and thus perpetuating the problems from crisis ti crisis.. A determined force for change from within Somalia with the uniting of tribes and the election of a trustworthy government so that the whole country is willing to work together for a common good is the only way forward.
There are many Somali graduates working in the outside world who could do more good developing Somalia.
It doesn't make sense that a country that can use their native cunning to hold the shipping world to randsum, from which they extort billions, can have such extremes of poverty and wealth and depend on other countries to keep their people alive.

Africa has arable land, tourism and places where plant and hunger colher.Não can attribute only to the external economic backwardness and dependency, Americans, Europeans and Japanese buy most of the food produced in the world because one day they worked hard for this, if with all the politically committed poulação within its borders and built what we call a better country, are not sucking people are competent and worthy life of comfort that teem. Today export technology that is much more profitable than the same food and care relativamentes low cost, a move no master exploiters of the world. Africa needs to have government commitment to his people, that works for its people and stop the hypocrisy aside blaming the outside world for their misfortune. Brazil could be a better country today if not for the corruption, bureaucracy and political compromises with the nation. Saldades the two best ever held in the country.

Well it amazes me why they don't do it, but apparently they have this cardboard fold out type shelters, flat packed like a pallet for the numbers being described this is the only way these people can shelter from the elements, apart from tents which again are a compressed type of dwelling, OK next problem transport, buses or trucks and with this you bring supplies to these people coming from the unstable areas, yes everything is fraught with risk, what are the security forces doing?
Another method of distributing aid is with a mobile phone in Africa one can literally dial the recipient with an IOU (cuts out the middle persons) and they then have the means to procure whatever it is that they need, probably still have to bribe some folk there but cleaner hands for the aid workers :(
Yes some probity issues but not rocket science, when the aid workers collect the phone numbers with some sort of checking see Gramin? Bank
The next thing of course is health and welfare and hopefully some planning for repatriation, these movements of people put great strain on the local populaces and their resources.
Hope some of these ideas see the light of day!

Nothing it is natural law. Africa has its problems because of its own political systems this is not our problem even in humanity terms. Humanity states if we should really assist then we should enter this country and remove the ruling Militants and rebuild a country of prosperity.
Truly this is not our problem that area of the world is notorious for this weather condition. Do we tell Northern people living in cold climates that we should help them to provide them with food? No they get on with it that is the best humanity.

Haven't we done enough? Oh don't get me wrong. I'm heart sorry for the plight of those kids. But I stopped giving to ANYTHING outside the UK when I discovered during Band Aid in the 80's that half the cargo of the ship bound for Ethiopia was LUXURY goods for the GOVERNMENT - and the other half was aid from us numpties.
I heard a Somalian lady say yesterday on TV that aid should be STOPPED and then governments would HAVE to do something. She even said that yes, a helluva lot of people would die but it would force them to ACT! They are all too busy lining their own pockets or money collected for AID purposes is going to arm Somali rebels! Not on your life!
After all these years of giving, surely to Christ the respective governments of these stricken countries should've been DRILLING to find a water table. There's GOT to be one!
What's happening now is like putting an Elastoplast on a bloody compound fracture! IT DOESN'T WORK!

Unfortunately the best thing to do is nothing. Do not get involved, leave Africa to the Africans.
How many years has Europe and the West been dishing out money and aid and medicine and food and provisions to East Africa. This has ended up doing far more harm than good because then more humans survive than would have been the case without the aid.... these humans then in turn have more kids, who go on to have more kids who will then also have kids. It is better to let nature take its course.

The simple fact is to give more money.
But I can see why many people are not doing so.
They associate Somalia with terrorism and piracy, and of course there is the issue with many people here having to make spending cuts on a personal level.
Of course, people forget that it is not just Somalia that is affected by the drought, in addition to which almost all Somali's are not involved in terrorism or piracy.
As for the long term solution, well that will involve Somalia having a stable democratic government, and that does not look like it will happen for a while.

this area of the planet is not suitable for sustaining massive populations.. even when the rain is plentifull many go hungry.
the only way to help is to reduce the number of people living in that area!
this it seems is happening already.
as cruel as it sounds.. life is hard and nature takes as easily as it gives.
if helping means reducing human suffering then the biggest impact would be to take somalia by force and replace its government so that aid can reach the right places.
after that when the famines happpen again we do the same... and on and on and on until we finally realise that there are too many people on the planet and some.. must go....

When people say that they shouldn't help, they're thinking of the hundreds dying as a statistic, not as real people. One charity's motto is 'no child born to die' and this is especially relevant here. I think that the best way to help is through respected charities such as 'Water Aid' or 'Save The Children'. Charities like this will use your money wisely.
I do agree that they should have contraception provided, because it is better for children not to be born than to have a short life filled with pain and starvation. I don't know which charities provide this (if any) but there should be one, because less children to feed means more food for the family.
People need to give what they can afford (so people with higher incomes should give more). Famous and influential people need to publicise the situation to encourage the public to donate.
Hopefully the charities plans look something like this:
Short-term aid - food, water, shelter
Long-term aid - education on farming/getting food/contraception, water pump
The main problem is that the powerful people normally have a bad attitude towards poverty-they like other countries to be dependant on them so their country can be more affluent. As long as inhumane people are powerful, it will be difficult to help other countries.

Sorry if it sounds hearsh and unfeeling but I really do believe that the only way to help these people is to stop throwing food and aid and whatever at them. All they learn from this is to trot out their starving children at the next food shortage and hold their hands out.
Aid is teaching them nothing - other than expecting the civilised countries to put their hands in their pockets again the next time around.
Teach them how to help themselves, famine is a way of life down there, the same as flooding is here!
Also, has anybody ever noticed when they show pictures of the famine that it's only the children and the old who look malnourished? The younger adults, with very few exceptions, look quite well fed to me...!
