Is the Bible the Inspired Word of God?

During a question and answer session at a recent speaking engagement, a university student asked me, "Why do you believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God?" Now this is a very interesting question; and probably one of the most important questions any Christian could ask

themselves. What is so special, so unique about the Bible that Christians believe it is literally the inspired word of God?

In answering this student's question, I encouraged him to consider the following facts about the Bible:

First, the Bible is not just one single book. This is a more common misconception than many people realize, especially with people who do not come from a Judeo-Christian background. Rather than being a single book, the Bible is actually a collection of 66 books, which is called the canon of scriptures. These 66 books contain a variety of genres:

history, poetry, prophecy, wisdom, literature, letters, and apocalyptic just to name a few.

Second, these 66 books were written by 40 different authors. These authors came from a variety of backgrounds: shepherds, fishermen, doctors, kings, prophets, and others. And most of these authors never knew one another personally.

Third, these 66 books were written over a period of 1500 years. Yet again, this is another reminder that many of these authors never knew or collaborated with one another in writing these books.

Fourth, the 66 books of the Bible were written in 3 different languages. In the Bible we have books that were written in the ancient languages of Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic; a reflection of the historical and cultural circumstances in which each of these books were written.

And finally, these 66 books were written on 3 different continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe . Once again, this is a testament to the varied historical and cultural circumstances of God's people.

Think about the above realities: 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1500 years, in 3 different languages, on 3 different continents. What's more, this collection of books shares a common storyline- the creation, fall, and redemption of God's people; a common theme- God's universal love for all of humanity; and a common message- salvation is available to all who repent of their sins and commit to following God with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength. In addition to sharing these commonalities, these 66 books contain no historical errors or contradictions. God's word truly is an amazing collection of writings!

After I had shared the above facts with this student, I offered him the following challenge: I said to him, "If you do not believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, if you do not believe that the Bible is of a supernatural origin, then I challenge you to a test." I said to the student, "I challenge you to go to any library in the world, you can choose any library you like, and find 66 books which match the characteristics of the 66 books in the Bible. You must choose 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1500 years, in 3 different languages, written on 3 different continents. However, they must share a common storyline, a common theme, and a common message, with no historical errors or contradictions." I went on to say, "If you can produce such a collection of books, I will admit that the Bible is not the inspired word of God." The student's reply was almost instantaneous, he emphatically stated, "But that's impossible!"

"But that's impossible!" It truly is impossible, for any collection of human writings. However, the Bible passes this test. The Bible contains 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1500 years, in 3 different languages, on 3 different continents, with no historical errors or contradictions. The entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, bears the mark of Divine inspiration.

Is the Bible the Inspired Word of God?

    Yes. Most definitely indeed!

"The Bible is God's Inspired Word - Which is Supported by a Mountain of Facts"

The Bible is not a mere book as you know. The Bible was God breathed and is perfect and without error. In fact, the Bible is one of the top most translated and best selling books in the world. It is also the #1 historical book within history that has remained the most accurate and true to it's original more than another other historical book,

However, more importantly, the Bible is backed up by:

    1. Scientific Evidences

(in chemistry, paleontology, astronomy, biology, ECT.)

    2. Prophecies Fulfilled

    (Messianic and Israelic prophecies)

    3. Textual verifications

(with the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls)

    4. Spiritual encounters

    (both good and evil)

    5. Miracles

    (from prayers answered)

    6. An attack on God's Word

(with biblical cults, modern bible versions, and the new world movement)

    7. Historical accounts

    (from many cultures)

    8. Archeology

    9. Moral laws

    10. Logic

    11. Beauty and wonder within nature itself

(that declares God's glory and Godhead)

    12. Testimonies of born again (Bible believing) Christians

    (and their changed lives)

In fact, if your interested in checking out some pretty good bible evidences: Here are two links (that you may be already aware of) that I think you might really like...

In any event, I hope this answer helps you.

And may the love of the Lord shine upon you today.

    Please be well.

    Sincerely,

    Jason.

    Side Note:

Oh, and to answer someone else's response here: The Bible has no contradictions; Not even one! If you were to compare 2 Samuel 24:13 and 1 Chronicles 21:12 you will notice the differences in the wording of each passage which will give you the hint that these are not the same conversation. Gad must have actually approached David twice. 2 Samuel recorded the first approach of Gad where he asked David “Shall sever years of famine come to you?” While 1 Chronicles recorded Gad’s second approach to David where, perhaps due to the intense prayer of David after their first meeting, 7 years of famine was reduced to 3 yrs. There is no contradiction both passages are complimentary.

    Biased, biased, biased.

    Other things worthy of note:

    - Presumes that the Bible was written over a period of 1500 years. That is true according to tradition, but not according to the Bible or according to the estimates of appropriately-accredited scholars. That does not mean that the tradition is false! My point is that it's foolish to state as a fact something that arose from tradition and that is not based on any known fact.

    - There is at least one authentic contradiction in those 66 books (but only 1 that I have not been able to expose as a falsely-claimed contradiction):

    http://www.bible-reviews.com/topics_answers.html#S...

    - The author wrote

The student's reply was almost instantaneous, he emphatically stated, "But that's impossible!"

Clearly, that student was not a very well-educated one. I could find treatises on mathematics or geometry that would easily fit those requirements. History would be more difficult, but likely I could find battle accounts that are considered historically factual that were written over a 1500 year period (and in far more than merely 3 languages or 3 continents). In some subjects it would be more difficult, but I think those subjects would be relatively easy to satisfy the requirement. I suspect that this is an imagined conversation - not a real question asked of a real student, who *certainly* would not be able to respond so quickly in the negative without giving the matter some thought.

    Is this a question?

Some Bibles have 66 books. Some have more. Some have less. Some books should be in the Bible, but have been lost over time. The Bible itself mentions many inspired books that are not found within, like the book of Iddo the Seer, and the book of Nathan the Prophet. The Bible is a collection of testimonies about God, but it wasn't written by God. That doesn't mean that they aren't inspired, although some are more inspirational than others. Isaiah is polar opposite to Song of Solomon. Ultimately, it is up to the Spirit of God to testify what is true, and what is not. Otherwise we would be endlessly stuck in a quagmire of tradition and translation issues.

This hardly qualifies as a question, seeing as you answer it yourself.

    For the sake of accuracy:

Fourth, the 66 books of the Bible were written in 3 different languages. In the Bible we have books that were written in the ancient languages of Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic; a reflection of the historical and cultural circumstances in which each of these books were written.

Incorrect. None of the Bible was penned in Aramaic. Some of Daniel was written in Chaldean.

You would be hard pressed to prove any of the Bible was written in Africa. The narratives/books written by Moses were written AFTER leaving Egypt, after entering the Levant, which is not part of Africa.

If you look at the evidence from both sides, and actually keep an open mind. It doesn't seem that way, but then again that's just my opinion. But in reality, you asked, so I'll tell you.

First of all, if the bible was divinely inspired, it wouldn't have so many contradictions, and yes it does have many contradictions.( http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/ )

And not only that, but if this God was truly benevolent, then he wouldn't have allowed Christianity to be corrupted, which it was corrupted, and it still is. Like the Inquisition; Christians hunted down nonbelievers and killed them, and they attacked Muslim towns and boiled Muslims alive. Would this benevolent God allow this? No. Especially not if it was the Christians doing it.

Sprinkle the house with blood to disinfect against plague of leprosy? You know blood is a good media of germs, bacteria, as well as toxin - I hope Dr. William Campbell does not use this method of disinfecting the Operation Theatre, the operation theatre.

It is mentioned in the book of Leveticus, Ch. No.12, Verse No.1 to 5, and we know medically, that after a mother gives birth to a child, the post-partal period,it is unhygienic. To say it is ‘unclean’, Religiously - I have got no objection. But Leviticus,

Ch. No.12 Verse No.1 to 5, says that… ‘After a woman gives birth to a male child, she will be unclean for 7 days, and the period of uncleanliness will continue for 33 days more.

If she give birth to a female child, she will be unclean for two weeks, and the period of uncleanliness will continue for 66 days. In short, if a woman gives birth to a male child… ‘a son’, she is unclean for 40 days.

If she gives birth to a female child… ‘a daughter’, she is unclean for 80 days. I would like my Christian friends to explain to me scientifically, how come a woman remains unclean for double the period, if she gives birth to a female child, as compared to a male child.

The Bible also has a very good test for adultery - How to come to know a woman has committed adultery, in the book of Numbers, Ch. no.5 Verse No..11 to 31. I’ll just say in brief. It says that… ‘The priest should take holy water in a vessel, take dust from the floor, and put it into the vessel - And that is the bitter water ‘And after cursing it, give it to the woman And if the woman has committed adultery, after she drinks it, the curse will enter her body, the stomach will swell, the thigh will rot, and she shall be cursed by the people. If the woman has not committed adultery, she will remain clean and she will bear the seed. A novel method of identifying whether a woman has committed adultery or not.

The first point was that -‘The creation of the Earth and the Heaven - the universe was in six, 24-hour days. Light was then before the source of light - Point No. 2. Three - Day came into existence before creation of Earth. Point No. 4 - Earth came into existence before Sun. Point No. 5 - Vegetation came into existence, before sunlight Point No. 6 - Light of the Moon is its own light. Point No. 7 - The earth - Will it perish or will it abide forever? Point No. 8 - The earth has got pillars. Point No. 9 - The heavens have got pillars. Point No. 10 - God said… ‘You can have all plants and all vegetation, including the poisonous plants?’ Point No. 11 - The scientific test the falsification test, of Mark, Ch. No. 16, Verse No. 17 and 18. Point No. 12 - A woman remains unclean for double the period, if she gives birth to a daughter, as compared to a son. Point No. 13 - Using blood to disinfect the house, against plague of leprosy. Point No. 14 – How do you find out the bitter water test for adultery? Point No. 15 - Eighteen different contradictions in less than 60 Verses of Ezra, Ch. 2, and Nehemiah, Ch. 7. I did not count them as 18 different - I counted them only as one. Point No. 16 - The total is different is both the chapters. Point No. 17 - Are there 200 singing men and women, or are there 245 singing men and women? Point No. 18 - Was Jehoiachin 18 years old, or was he 8 years old when he began to reign? Point No. 19 - Did he reign for 3 months, or 3 months 10 days. Point No. 20 - Did Solomon had 3000 baths, or 2000 baths? Point No. 21 - Is that Basha, how could he invade Judah, 10 years after his death? Point No. 22 is - Almighty God - He said, I put up a rainbow in the sky, as a promise to the human kind, never to submerge the world again by water. I have listed only 22, out of the hundreds available unscientific points in the Bible… scientific errors - This is not the word of God - It may contain part of God - But the other unscientific portion is not the word of God.

I'm fifty six years old, I don't think that I have enough time to read all of your question, so I am just going to say yes, The Bible is Inspired Word of God.

That is an important question that we should be ready to answer but not all that easy to answer.

I'll say this, that it's the Holy Spirit who confirms that God's word IS his very word to us. Jesus is the light of the world in us. The Lord has given us of his spirit to see that this holy Bible is the true word of God. The more we read it and study it, the more we see it's truth.

i see your point but also consider the fact that the early church voted on which of the books to include. thus leaving out the Q Gospels and Gospel of James the Just, and many more. Read many.

Now considering the wisdom of the other schools of faith, myself a moderate liberal Christian can;t help but wonder, is this simply what works for .... us? You have to understand, I grew up in NYC with friends of many faiths in public schools. mixed neighborhoods wherever we moved. you learn to respect their way of life and say, hell, if he's a righteous man, who am I to say he is condemned if his faith allows him to be closer to God and it works for HIM/HER. Ultimately I am somewhat biased because I value deeply the teachings of a great teacher known as Jesus, emphasis on love of all people and striving to give back to our communities and world.
