There is no question that the two black "women" should be charged with a hate crime. And as harsh as this sounds, the question becomes whether or not McDonald's had a legal responsibility to intervene if none of the parties were affiliated with McDonald's (i.e. were employees). Based on the given information, the law (as it is written) may probably state that McDonald's did indeed did not have a LEGAL obligation to intervene; however, there is definitely a MORAL obligation for something to be done. I hope that McDonald's does something proactive on its own volition by rectifying this situation by at least paying the medical costs for the victim; this would be the greatest PR coup that McDonald's could ever pull off (not only that, I feel it would be the right thing to do). It truly is a terrible reflection on our society when all of those people could sit idly by while the beating was going on.
