At what age did you come to America, and how many years did it take for you to become fluent and comfortable..?

..in your new language, English? My paternal grandparents came from Europe in the 1880s. Fifty years later when Grandma wrote letters to my Dad in World War 2, she still wasn't fluent in written English. Her letters were a mixture of English words and Swedish words. I've always thought that each person learns the new language at their own pace, and I don't have a problem with that. However too many people today seem to think that when somebody crosses our border and enters the US that he/she should be speaking English immediately. What do you think? 
If you are an immigrant to the US have you felt hostility from the English speaking 
Americans because you weren't yet fluent in English at the time?

A friend of ours adopted a girl from Ethiopia who was 5 when she first came to america knowing no english. In a little over 2 months she was fluent. I've heard that younger children are able to learn languages faster :)
