Could someone recommend a mecha anime?

You should definitely try Full Metal Panic and Code Geass. Both great shows, with good pacing and entertaining characters.

In Code Geass in particular, the mechs actually visibly improve within the span of the series. At the beginning, the characters brag about how their latest-generation military mechs with better armor and harpoon guns are able to dominate over the old models, and it comes as quite a surprise when a prototype armed with an energy weapon appears. By the end of the second season, ALL the mechs that can contribute anything in the final battle have both flying abilities and a wide variety of energy weapons and force shields, all of which were introduced over the course of the show. And this is an anime that isn't even ABOUT the mechs.

Watch the Gundam 0079 compilation movie trilogy.Then watch the Zeta Gundam series.After doing that you will come to the realization that most Gundams steal ideas 99% of the time from those two timeless anime classics.No sprouting wings and most of the time the mechs stay on the ground.

And Turn A, it's slow but the fights are very well done and gripping, and an overall amazing serious, but only if you're mature enough

You should go watch gundam 00.

Epic story line, no words for it.

Mech/drama/action/romance.
