In the 2008 republican primary a debate moderator asked the candidates if they believed in evolution?

Huckabee was one of those that let it be known he did not.

Would it be more telling to ask this year if the candidates believe the story of Noah's ark actually occurred or if Adam and Eve actually existed, or if the Arc of the Covenant had the magical powers described in the bible? I would like to know the answer to those questions, Do you find them relevant?

They're incredibly relevant questions. They show whether or not the candidate is willing to ignore indisputable empirical data when it conflicts with their ideology.

    No question is more revealing.

I'm not sure if those specifically would be relevant. But ... I'd be interested to know some questions about how religious views influences political views. The evolution question is a good one; some might want to kick science out of our schools. or so the other side would say.
