Film Noir and Neo Noir comparison?

Really, Neo-Noir is the modern day version of what film noir once was.

And really it comes down to the themes, the detective story, the femmes fatale...and so on, but it can also; and if it's a good one usually dose, employ lighting techniques, using lots of shadow and shooting with chiaroscuro (the harsh contrast between light and dark) to give you that oh so typical film-noir feel.

It's my favourite genre and I usually just call it film noir regardless of it's age.

China Town is alright and certainly very visual, but If you want an AMAZING neo noir that shares a lot of the same themes as Double Indemnity look up a little known HBO film called "The Last Seduction". It's superb and a really great film, it's still quite dark, but it's not as style conscious as China Town. it's modern day (sort of, it's a 90's film) and about a woman's hatred of her husband, with the same insurance twist as DI.

Don't be tempted by the sequel, "The Last Seduction 2". It's awful!
