Figure Skaters...How do you wear your hair for practice?
So I guess this could kinda be a hair and beauty question, but I would like figure skaters to answer (I'm assuming you're girls). So I usually just wear my hair in a ponytail to practice, but I've gotten kinda bored of that. So I recently started wearing it in a messy bun and a elasticy headband...but even then I'm getting a little bored of it. I would also like some ideas for competitions too. I like creative :) So I have a few questions...
1) How do you wear your hair for practice
2) How do you wear your hair for competitions?
3) What are some unique ways to wear you hair for figure skating and keep it from getting in the way/keep it out of your face?
I'm not sure if it matters, but I have shoulder length hair with some long layers. I don't have bangs. My hair is thick but very fine...Thanks in advance :)

1) For practice, depending on where I'm coming from, I wear it either in a bun (with hairnet and pins), a ponytail, or a topknot. I can't stand messy hair, so I try to avoid the topknot.
2) In competitions, I always wear it up in a bun. Sometimes I french braid the top and then wind it into a bun, but I prefer to focus on my skating than on my hairstyle.
3) Here are some hairstyles that you could do. Personally, I'd never spend that much time on my hair. As long as it's neat and out of my face, I don't care how fancy it is. (These are all pictures of pretty young kids because no one over the age of 10 spends that much time on their hair to get what these kids have).

Layers and Bangs make hairstyles hard to do. You will definitely need a hairnet and lots of hairspray and hair jell to get the above - or similar - looks. It helps if you wet your hair down first before doing it up. I have light layering and just-past-shoulder length hair, so my hair is pretty easy to deal with.
Have fun :)

I used to do a French braid on the side back into a ponytail because I could do that really quickly, and my layers stayed in the ponytail that way. Then school started and I don't have time to do that anymore, so now I do a messy bun or ponytail and clip my bangs back out of my face with bendy clips, not bobby pins, because those fall out.
For competitions I do a French braid into a bun usually, sometimes just a bun. Simple is better, the judges shouldn't be focusing on your hair, they should be focusing on your skating.

1) For practice I mostly put my hair in a ponytail, then braid that or I French-braid my hair. I had bangs about 2 years ago and I use an Adidas headband that I got from a store I buy my soccer stuff at.
2) For competitions, I do this braided-headband thing. You side part your hair, then French-braid a section at the hair line. Then, for the other side of the part, I regularly braid 2-3 thin sections of hair. I then take all of my hair (including the braids) and twist it into a tight ballerina bun at the crown of my head. Or I just do a regular ballet bun.
3) You could make two braids, then pin them up on top of your head.

1) a pony tail with a part on the side (i think it looks weird on me if i just have it slicked back) and if i have extra time or if i know i'm going to be working on mostly jumps i'll put a bun in my hair because when i jump i always have to do my hair a million times! but it's also really hard to put my hair in a bun because i have lots of layers so i have to use a million bobbypins (which were not allowed to use at our rink) and gel/hairspray.
2) a bun with a part on the side (again, i think it looks weird on me if i have it slicked back.)
3) you could do a pony tail, bun, braid, french braid, messy bun, pig tails, or use something like harigami.

Properly I'm a boy but I think on us boys, short hair will be always better. Long hair doesn't ALWAYS show a sign of dominance. You see most other guys with long hair that doesn't look like they can fight. For example there is actually a boy in my school along with very long blonde hair.

sorry if i'm not the most creative but here's what i feel most comfortable in when i'm sakting :)
1) Messy-ish bun. I used to put it into a pony tail but my hair's now almost waist length so when i put it in a ponytail, it would whip me in the face when i did jumps and really threw me off.
first, i tie my hair into a really tight pony tail so it doesn't get loose when i spin. Then, I take a REALLY stretchy elastic and start to put it in a pony tail, but on the 2nd loop I only pull my hair through half way, and then on the 3rd loop I wrap the whole elastic around all my hair so my hair ends up in more of a big loop than a bun. I like it, because it doesn't come out or loose like a bun does when I'm doing my doubles :)
And i have a lot of baby hairs which bother me a lot so I wear a headband to push it back.

are my favorite headbands for practice :) i bobbypin them to my hair so it doesnt fall off on layback spins
2) really secure bun with a hair piece tied around it to match my dress. i'm trying to let my coach convince me to use one of those black plastic headbands because I hate having my hair perfectly flat. I like having the bump at the front
http://www.glamour.com/images/beauty/2010/07/0622-... <-- kind of like this, but not exactly
3) i wear headbands but my friend has about the same length hair as you and LOTS of layers so she uses like 20 hairclips that are all different colours to keep her hair back. She's blonde and the colors actually look really nice in her hair.
-hope this helps... :)

Boys usually wear sweats, t-shirts and fleeces for practice. Some purchase skating pants that have snaps so they can be snapped down under their boots.

I've experienced mine both ways too... but the husband prefers it short... he in no way complains when I grow it very long, but is always all over himself w/the complements when I cut it off
