16 month old will not nap?

Just over the past week or so, my 16 month old son will not go down for a nap. I know he needs one, but I cannot get him to fall asleep. (He's grumpy and unpleasant throughout the remainder of the day when he doesn't nap.)

Any suggestions?

I may not be well liked for this answer, but I would make sure he has a full tummy and some water then just stick him in his crib until he falls asleep. If he cries for 30 minutes, let him cry, if he whines, let him whine. He may take up to an hour to fall asleep but he's gotta learn that naptime is not optional. Even if he just lays there and reads a book until he falls asleep, that works. Make sure to put him down around the same time everyday when you know he is getting tired

    good luck

edit: even if he doesn't end up sleeping, it can be viewed as his "quiet-time" I would suggest doing this even when they grow out of their nap. they need down time as much as us mommy's do!:)

  • Its a phase they go through. My daughter started doing that around when she was 18 months or so. she just would refuse to go down for a nap, no matter how many times i tried. and then after about a month, she started taking naps again. but then at about 20-21 months, she went back to not wanting to take a nap. now she just turned 2, and she never takes naps during the day any more. she just refuses to take it, so i have just given up trying. i figure if she doesn't think she needs one, then maybe she doesn't any more. i dunno. lol. but she always goes to bed really go at bed time. every child is different. this is a normal thing that toddlers do. i have friends that have toddlers as well. and their kids went through this too around the 16-18 month mark. hang in there.

    this may seem absurd..

but what i do, and it works.. is holding him down. cuddle him up to you but make sure he cant break free from your cuddle.. if hes tired, eventually he will sleep.. and this also may just be a faze hes going through.
