The Effect of Books VS. The Effect of Movies?
Hey guys ;D
Well, a question to think where you think the effect of books and movies differ.
For example, books make you imagine more because the words they give, but the visual is all up to you, whereas movies, you see what you see. But sometimes, 3D effects can be really effective (okay, not that I've really seen many 3D effects in the 3d movies I've seen but hey), or sometimes when you see the emotion, especially crying, I think, is really moving.
I'd love to see what you think, your ideas, examples and experiences!
Also, any book recommendations would be nice - not so much in the mood for sci-fi/fantasy books at the moment, but open to pretty much everything else - realistic fiction would be nice, but any ideas are welcome!
Thanks guys :)

It's true, movies give you the visual. And with books, you can imagine the setting, the characters, their voices, etc.
Books are also straight from the source. There is no interpretation when you read a book, but your own, which is nice of course. This is also why people get very touchy about movie interpretations of books because the movie isn't how *they* imagined it. Movie versions aren't supposed to be a straightforward interpretation of the books, however, and it's impossible for it to be your own interpretation, and that's the beauty of it. The movie is someone else's interpretation, and I truly think that's a gift. People don't open their minds up enough to others' opinions and (in this case) interpretations. People should be more accepting in terms of things like this, instead of so uptight as many are. But that's my opinion.
You bring up another point with the emotional representations of the script and book. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a fantastic example for me. SPOILER When I read the part about Snape being in love with Lily and that whole thing, I felt kinda bad for him and was like "okay, so I guess he's really a good guy" but he still didn't really strike me as being a tragic character, even though he clearly is. It's just because I've read six books and hated him like Harry did throughout each, it's not because I'm not a sensitive person. Anyway, that scene in DH Part 2 made me cry each of the 3 times I saw it in theaters. That's when I really connected to Snape, that's when I felt awful for him. And if you think about it, it wasn't until I'd seen the movie representation of things that Harry had seen "live" in the pensieve that I understood how Snape felt. In any other book, this might all have been described in a letter Snape had in his robes, but I think Rowling understands that some things are better seen than read.
I know this was just one big defensive answer in favor of movies, but I really think people are too harsh about movies in B&A.
As for recommendations, Water for Elephants was amazing. I never saw the movie, so don't judge it by Robert Pattinson at all if you have- it's a fantastic book!

With books, you can imagine anything and everything. You create how the person looks like, how they act, how they sound. Even if the writer doesn't describe them all that well, you can imagine them how you want them to look like.
With movies, everything is shown to you already. There's no Imagination there. Not only that, but sometimes movies can be a bit choppy and leave something out. Or change something. Like, I was watching The Help the other day and for the most part, it's the same as the book. However, there were a few things that weren't the same. Or with a relationship, it wasn't described as much or as detailed as it should have been and if you didn't read the book, you would have been lost and confused a slight bit.
I like books better because you can transport yourself to a whole new world and let your imagination run wild.
As far as books, I'm can't think at the moment. I'm sure there are books that are good and I've read but I can't think of them at the moment. (If you like, you can go to my profile and there's a link to my amazon reviews. It might help you determine what you might want to read...)

I am gonna opine differently. i agree with your point that Books lets you Imagine but Movies makes you imagine more with more entities. Let me give you a detail Explanation
Books gives you only words and lets you imagine which could go up to highest range of your Imagination power. where as while you are watching a movie which is well crafted It's not just what you see on the Screen your mind will imagine beyond the limits of your present Imagination with the help of other Technical Aspects. You May feel movie is just what is happening on the screen. that'a wrong notion. Movie is Something which is a result of thoughts that you go through while watching. and this final result comprises of What is Happening on the Screen, What you Hear from beyond the Screen or from the Surroundings of the theater, The Color of the Lighting used on the Screen, The Directions in which the slides are moving (Camera Movement) & finally The pace at which the slides move (If you are aware, A scene that you see on screen is a result of Still photos sliding at a pace of 24 per second) so Movie lets you Imagine with aid of few Technical processes but this happens in Sub conscious Mind. Of course this is again depends on the Director but If you realize Movie is a Creative Science You would realize the effect it brings in. I don't wanna blame you because there are not as many effective movies as effective Books. and again there is reason behind it Because Writing is something which has been a part of Human Evolution and is started somewhere in 4th Millennium and officially took it's shape from somewhere close to 1450. But It's Hardly 150 years since motion picture is invented. this common opinion will not change as long as people see movies merely as a medium of Entertainment.
P.S. My Intention is not Degrading the Effect of Books but to say A Well Made Movie is more effective than a well written Book. Watch Some Good Movies. Give Movies a chance.

Well, I consider myself an imaginative person, but only with stuff that I think of, not really other peoples' stories. Movies are cool because everything's already imagined. But some stuff just can't be translated. I can't think of anything right now but I'm pretty sure of it. And some entire books could never become motion pictures, for example James Joyce's Finnegans Wake and Ulysses. Stanley Kubrick did an excellent job of bringing A Clockwork Orange to the medium of film but that book is one that can't have the same impact onscreen.

there are no special effects that are as good as your mind, Books make you really feel for the character (well, the good books do!) you form an emotional bond with books.
Movies are entertainment, you have to view them totally separate from the books, due to time constrictions they HAVE to leave stuff out, and the characters won't be the same etc..but if you want to be entertained for a couple of hours and not have to think too much a movie is great.
I'm a massive fan of both.
Book Suggestions:
We need to talk about Kevin - Shriver, I read this 6 years ago and It has just stayed with me! And it's out in the cinema in december
