Is sand from my sandbox/ the beach good for gerbil bedding?
I'm getting two gerbils soon, and I need to know which type of sand won't irritate their respiratory system, etc. the sand from my sandbox is pretty coarse. I'm not buying sand from the pet store, and don't suggest kitty litter. My plan is to fill 2 or 3 inches with sandbox/ beach sand, 3 or 4 inches of shredded paper towel and cardboard, and 1 inch of toilet paper at the top for nesting material. Experienced gerbil owners, vets, and other experts only. If anybody- ANYBODY- answers "idk, try it. " or "just buy chinchilla sand" or "probably" i will report you. thanks :)

It has to be VERY fine and soft. Like an example is, when you place it on your hand and wipe it off, the sand will float in the air. Also it MUST be calcium based. I don't suggest you use sandbox/beach sand. You are better off with a nice store bought bedding. I recommend Eco Bedding. My gerbils seem to LOVE it.

i'd advise aspen shavings, aspen pellets, or carefresh bedding for gerbils. i've got used aspen shavings and carefresh for my gerbils, and that i actually want aspen. They do, too. Aspen is large for digging and tunneling in. it fairly is absorbent, seems solid, controls scent properly, and is the main secure wood shaving you are able to supply on your gerbils. stay faraway from cedar in any respect costs. Cedar is terrible for small animals. Pine isn't all that large, the two. i would not use it for my own gerbils, so i do no longer advise it to every person. There are people who use pine and say they have not had any issues, yet I, individually, would not danger it. Chinchilla sand is physically powerful for bathing in, yet sand isn't suitable for everlasting bedding. dodge the cotton-like bedding. The fibers can wrap around limbs, and if ingested, it ought to reason a blockage. i come across that the precise determination between gerbil proprietors i've got talked to is aspen shavings. attempt it out on your gerbils and notice how they do on it.

well, i know you will report me for this, but since you will read it, and KNOW why i am saying this,
then what ever.
dont get beach sand.
This will NOT do anything to your gerbils BUT dirty them.
The only reason people buy chinchilla sand, is because it is CLEAN, and it is DUST FREE, and there is no bacteria in it, rather than using beach sand, where peoples FEET and who knows what else could have been on it. then you go using it for CLEANING your gerbils!?
And also, the bedding you are using is no good. This WILL smell RIGHT away. and will need CONSTANT cleaning! and in the long term, it will cost you more money than buying REGULAR bedding.
You wanted to know what sand won't irritate their skin, and the ONLY sand that wont, is what you will report us for!? wow. just WOW.
I would suggest Crittercare,BOXO,carefresh,etc..
Good Luck! :3

The problem with using sandbox or beach sand is that many organisms can be living in it, to kill them you need to cook the sand in your oven for a couple hours. It also may not be the cleanest.
