How do people afford to go to comic con?

I was thinking of going, but...

a round plane trip from Toronto to San Diego costs a minimum of $520

Admission to get in is $165 for 4 day badge(if I go all the way there, I obviously would stay longer)

The average hotel price per night is around $200. If I stay for 3 nights, it's $600.

Plus money for food and ACTUAL spending for buying stuff might be another $200.

The total costs more than $1000 for virtually a 3 day trip, and yet SOOOO many people go! Am I calculating something wrong or do most attendees live near there?

Update:

Toronto comic con sucks, it's in a small room(okay, exaggerated) but there are hardly any well-known guests.

Try to find friends to go with you to cut down on the hotel room costs. Or, look for small motels further away from the comic con and take a bus to the con. You could try volunteering to work at the comic con. It would cut down on the time you had to look around but you would not have to pay for admission.

You certainly have to save money to go to it.

    Edit:

Consider going to the New York comic con. It is in October.

I stick to going to the smaller cons. I live in Wisconsin and they have a few that happen throughout the year that I go to.

Find one close to you. Save up money. You don't have to cosplay. Pinch in with a friend.
