Seems like it is not a sport but maybe I am wrong.

Driving around in circles is not a sport, it's a past time.

Sport: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively
Sounds like Nascar is a sport by definition. It most certainly is a sport and the claim that it's not is usually made by fans of "stick and ball" sports whose fans are always engaged in the politics of the sport rather than the game i.e. lockouts and salaries. Every other sport has an athlete whining about how he's not getting enough money because they can only afford 5 mansions and 7 yachts and they want more. You don't get those game-stopping politics in a sport like Nascar. Nascar athletes truly love what they do, even at the modified and local series level.

I say yes. It is a competition and the drivers have to be in good shape to perform just like in other sports. The cars have to be good and play a huge role, but I think horse racing is a sport too though the horses do most of the work. Hunting is not a sport because the animal hunted does not have a gun.

It's semantics. Generally a sport is differentiated from other categories like games, by some sort of atheltic ability.
It does require a certain amount of physical endurance. High G forces, and high heat in the cockpit require you to be in some kind of physical shape so you can focus on driving and not physical discomfort I believe.
It's obviously requires hand/eye coordination.
I see it as a borderline sport. Just like pool or bowling. They have sport like attributes, but don't seem to follow the original spirit of the definition of the word.
As I am sure you know, the trend is for people to refer to various auto racing and competitive automotive/motorcycle events as 'motorsports." So by popular definition, I think it's a sport (and words mean what people think they mean, even if that means the dictionary makers have to change the word's defintion to match - fascinating subject.)

Yes, it is a Motor Sport.
Must suck to have nothing better to do then ask one the most repeated questions in this section. You would think with all the spare time you must have you could have at least come up with a different way to ask this question. Then again that would require you think.

Sit in a 120 degree car for four hours, race at 200 mph bumper to bumper, realizing that the slightest movement will put you in the wall, the whole time thinking you're in some death trap, drain yourself mentally and physically in the process, and come back and tell me what you think.
I know your answer already.

No, it's a sanctioning body. However it falls under auto racing which is a real sport, so henceforth NASCAR(it's an acronym, so it's all capital letters) is a sport.

it's a real sport. Lots of people didn't think it was until ESPN picked it up a few years ago. You have to be in shape to run 190 mph in a car where the temperature inside gets up to 120 degrees, where you pull G's in every corner, and have to maintain lighting reflexes to keep that bad boy under control.

I would think so. It doesn't necessarily require athleticism the way football, baseball, basketball, running, or even golf requires, but it is physically demanding competition and it requires skill and mental toughness. I think it fits any definition of a sport I've ever seen.

its on ESPN, FSN, Yahoo! Sports and they play the national anthem before every event
that sounds to me like a sport
