Did I wreck my batteries?

I have several AA rechargeable batteries. I managed to get everything together at the same time (difficult for me) and put them all in chargers and plugged them in. Then I left them that way for maybe a month. Now my mouse needs batteries and none of them work. Are you not supposed to leave them plugged in?

It depends on the charger. My charger will charge the batteries till they are fully charged, then goes into a maintenance mode keeping the batteries topped off.

Sounds like your batteries and/or your charger is toast. But try putting one battery in the charger and see if the charge LED come on. If it does let it charge for say 15 minutes. They try it in your mouse just to see if it does anything.
