Soldier's opinion on this comment...Am I being too thin-skinned?

I'm in the military, and we were doing some training being instructed by Special Forces personnel.

The SF Sergeant made some comment that we need to "pretend we are SEALs" (or something like that), to which an older guy in civilian attire said "Just don't die like the SEALs" in reference to the recent helicopter crash that claimed 22 SEAL's lives.

The comment was "booed" and people said "too soon", but I thought it was totally f****d up for anyone to say. Of course, I didn't do anything but shake my head.

Am I being too thin-skinned, or was this simply f*****d up, especially considering nearly all of us there have been deployed/have buddies downrange right now?

Opinions please.

Gallows humor. That's how some folks deal with things that scare them, or don't know how to express there true feelings.

It sounds like those guys need some sensitivity training!

    Not really.

Was the comment in bad taste? Yes, but you can chalk it up to interservice rivalry. I once spent a week with SEALS doing anti-terrorist training and got to hear a lot of comments from them bashing any service but their own. If the situations were reversed, you'd probably hear a SEAL make a similar off-color joke.

Personally I think it was completly inappropriate for him to make this comment especialy seeing as it JUST happened very recently & those where the guys to take out Osama...But some ppl dont take things as seriously & he may have thought that it was just a joke & it wasnt hurting anyone.

Either way I fully see where your coming from and I'd shake my head too, But yeah It's nothng I would take personally unless he continued with those type of comments then I might have a prob haha

Honestly I am a medic and during my first deployment my first patient got shot 3 times and I had to use humor to keep calm. Sometimes it is a persons way of coping with a stressful situation. It not only helped me to remain calm but it also helped me to cope with what happened. But on the other hand those were peoples loved ones and yes saying something like that could hurt. So no you are not being thin skinned, I just wanted to let you know that it could be his coping mechanism so please be understanding.

Too soon, but I would have answered the gallows humor with something like:

"You mean flying on Army aircraft to rescue Army Rangers?" That might have "sobered" the comments a little.

Maybe he wasn't trying to be funny, and really didn't want you to die?

It's inapropriate, but you'll get used to it.
