Well I upgraded to W 7 from XP last October and have never looked back!
Face it, XP is now past it's sell by date. It's nearly 12 years old.
Also what's the point? Support fo XP was withdrawn by Microsoft 14 months
ago and ALL support will be withdrawn within the next 18 months or so.
By then Windows 8 will be on the horizon because the Beta version will be
released early next year!

XP was a popular version, but Microsoft support for XP professional will cease on April 8th 2014, support for SP2 for 32 bit was discontinued in 2010, SP3 is OK is for another year I think, XP 64 bit never had a SP3, but is still supported.
Support for Vista SP1 also stopped recently, in the middle of July.

If you have a legal copy and have Windows Updates turned on you should be up to date and OK with XP for a while, and Vista, as you will not still be blessed with the older versions obviously.
Having said that, 7 will be better and safer, unless you want to run old games or something.
It is just a matter of budget really.
Regards, Bob.

This question is bound to provoke the haters and the lovers.
XP is stable windows 7 definitely isnt
XP is mature windows 7 definitely has a long way to go
XP is smaller and a lot easier to get to grips with
but you just cant stop progress
Windows 7 extends memory capabilities making it a must have for some users
Windows 7 is at least attempting to improve security, its about time
it is also starting to provide better fault detection, not understood properly by us i might add
but it has poor driver coverage for a lot of useful devices
it has also changed the features that drivers must cope with
to the extent that it damages the reputation of the product
when in fact its the OEM's that cant get it right or have dropped the
driver support for the product.
Many people hated and still hate VISTA we will all hate windows 7 for the same
reasons, especially since it is VISTA with bits and tweeks.
So in about 9 months time when OEM's have caught up and Service Packs
actually work, then Windows 7 may be worth getting. But for now VISTA is better
and XP is MUCH better for smaller less powerful systems.
its total failure to have a one button Fix for a non starting system
is frankly becoming its major annoyance as it falls over very easily.
This forum is full of people simply unable
to get their pc's working after relatively small problems forcing
them to resort to re-building their operating system, or worse still
considering opting back in to XP.
so for Windows 7? no thanks.

Windows 7, however XP is still a very very good operating system and is still the most widely used. Microsoft really did themselves proud with XP, 10 years later and it's still damned good. Vista was a disaster.

There is no support for XP which is one of the best reasons for upgrading to 7.
