Does the wrestler choose the gimmick or does the company choose one for him?

The decision is 100% up to the company.

While some gimmicks may have been suggested or "enhanced" by the wrestler, at the end of the day, the company decides whether or not to use the gimmick.

A mix balance of both. The wrestler can choose the gimmick he/she wants to use if it will benefit his/her career which can give him/her attributes, or a super feature mid-way or beginning of his/her career. Like for example, The Rock. He uses his own gimmick because it resembles his personality. Now the company can suit the wrestler in a gimmick category. A perfect example is John Cena. The company uses his gimmick, due to the PG Era. Cena can use any type of gimmick he wants, but the company has to approve of it.

A little bit of both. Stone Cold invented his own gimmick and the company liked it. Usually the company invents the gimmick for new wrestlers. Veteran wrestlers who join WWE get some say in their gimmick. Mick Foley had many discussions with Vince over his 'Mankind' gimmick before both were happy with it. Depends how much the company really wants the wrestler.

It all depends who they are. Many established superstars from NWA/WCW had to let VKM choose their gimmick even though many times it was similar to what the wrestler was in other organizations.

for newer guys, the company chooses (hence why we have so much bad gimmicks) but sometimes younger guys take the initiative with their gimmicks (zack ryder) and try to develop it. Back in the day, wrestlers used to come up with their gimmicks (Y2J, Austin 3:16).
