Why is so hard to get a visa to live in the US?

I'm a British citizen currently in education; I've just finished my GCSEs in school and got reasonably good results, now about to do A Levels in college then planning to study chemistry in university in the future.

I've always dreamed of living in the US ever since I was a kid, I still do now and probably still will in the future. I knew you needed a visa to move to the US, but I hadn't realised until recently when planning my future and looking through frequently asked questions about moving to the US, that is very, very tough to be accepted for a visa. Why? I don't understand? Even decent, qualified people have been refused - I'm sure it's better to give a chance to someone who is willing to work to replace someone who is unemployed and unwilling to work. I know that it's kind of to do with the amount of people employed at the moment, but I've heard from US citizens that a lot of Mexicans enter the country easily and just succumb to being lazy rather than working, or are they just eligable because of the law of being able to move because of family members and marriages?

It might be a bit early for anyone to tell, but will the situation get worse in the future and make it even more difficult for emigrants? Is chemistry an industry in the US which is lacking in employees?

You heard wrong. It is not easy for most Mexicans to enter the US, even illegally. Illegal immigrants pay thousands of dollars to smugglers and often risk arduous journeys across the desert. Drug cartels now control the smuggling business, sometimes holding immigrants for ransom, beating and killing them if their families do not come up with enough money. Those that make it here work very, very hard mostly in low-wage jobs, washing dishes in restaurants, picking produce in fields, or putting up drywall.

It is extremely hard for citizens of any country to qualify for immigration because of the huge global demand to immigrate, not only from developing countries like Mexico, but even developed countries with a high standard of living like the UK. Our present immigration laws written in the 60s strongly favor family petitions over skilled immigrants, yet it is opportunity that drives people to come here, hence, wait times of up to 23 years for immigrant visas.

Try immigrating to the UK. That can be very hard to do legally. Just for comparison...

You wouldn't replace a non-working bum, nobody is leaving the country because you are entering. You would be added to the population. Before they allow you to do that, they will want to make as sure as possible that you are not an added bum. It is easier for people who get sponsored by a close relative, but there the close relative has to sign an affidavit of support guaranteeing that the person they sponsor will not get governmental aid for up to 10 years. Of course like any system there can be loopholes. But Mexican are not generally lazy bums either. I am sure some are, but others are very hardworking people as well.

Chemistry will give you a pretty good chance at legally immigrating, particularly if you get a PhD. It will depend what you specialize in and where you are seeking employment, but you definitely would have a chance.

actually, about a million people legally immigrate or adjust status to legal resident in the US every year, more than the rest of the world combined. the US doesn't prioritize Brits over other nationalities even when they are decent, which seems to surprise lots of Brits who write here on Yahoo. US immigration law doesn't regard Brits as better or worse than anyone else. However, you should at least be here first before deciding to adopt stereotyped beliefs about Mexicans and others, but in reality, most Mexicans enter the US legally, even if it doesn't seem like it sometimes. most people immigrate into the US based on petitions filed by close relatives who are themselves either US citizens or green card holders, so at the moment, you probably aren't qualified. maybe you will be later. there are employment based immigrant visas and nonimmigrant visas as well.

Chances of rejection or chances of acceptance is same as any other immigrant. If you follow the US Immigration Law properly, chances are bright..:)

There are two types of USA visas. One is classified as an Immigrant Visa and the other as a Non-immigrant visa. Immigrant US visas are used by foreign nationals come to the United States in order to set up permanent residency. Non- immigrant US visas are issued for people who wish to travel to US on a temporary basis (business or pleasure). The type of Visa is defined by the purpose of travel to the US.

The US has 307 million people

    The UK 62 million people

so lets say 1000 people are studing chemisty in the UK

5000 are doing the same in the US

Employers have to pay up to $10k to get a foreign worker

or nothing to get an american one .... guess who wins

Practicaly all Mexicans that come here are Illegal. We don't have the money to deport them either. I think you have to have plenty of money to even get a student visa. To support yourself I guess. They sure let a lot of refugees over though. Then give them free housing and other benifits no citizens get. Good luck and see you when you get here.

Obama only lets you in if you are from a third world country like Mexico. So learn Spanish and get a tan, and you should be fine.

The US cannot pay its debts especially to China and it does not want many people in their country anymore.
