no they don't bite..their mouth is more like a sponge, when they land on a food they regurgitate digestive juices and then drink up the slurry they created

I have also pondered at this question myself, so I did research and it turns out no regular house flies cannot bite but are still harmful they can spread disease, poison some of your foods and are really annoying, the flies that do indeed bite are called stable flies, they can inflict painful bites in order to suck your blood or those of an animal, they can also carry various forms of disease and infections.

There are three main types of fly (in the UK) you might regularly encounter in your home although there are about 6000 species in the UK.
Bluebottle (calliphoria vomitoria)
Lesser Housefly (fannia canicularius).
Common housefly (musca domestica).
None of these are capable of piercing human skin and therefore cannot bite you.
Flies are important in respect of hygeine-for example the lesser housefly feeds on decaying liquid and food matter-so their presence indicates rotten foodstuffs-whereas the bluebottle (sometimes called a blowfly) feeds on dead carcasses and decaying animal matter-so i would be concerned if these were present in any situation.

Yes they do, one just bit me. I swatted it like a mosquito and its here dead in front of me. This is why I just looked it up. Its definitely a housefly. The sting felt just like a mosquito but slightly more painful, not by much. Crazy! Everywhere i look it says they don't bite, that is nonsense.

Yes they can and sometimes they do. Considering the other things that houseflies walk on I would be more concerned with getting rid of them.
