pathfinder roleplay questions for a beginner?

Hey, i have just started playing a game called pathfinder the roleplay game. i have played vampires the masqurade before but not a full dice system game like D&D. and i have some questions for character creation and leveling.

the questions i have could be answered by the book, but i dont have access to one atm.

the questions are primed for a starting lv3 char.

1rogue/2magus

simply put, i need to know how to , after making a rogue perfered class, stack on two levels of magus in terms of stat increase (abilities etc) ive read over the D20 website but the lack of analogus format doesnt help much for simple questions on how to level up a character. and herolab has magus class locked unless i buy the program.

also. i need to have someone give me a dumbed down explaination of what i need to roll in combat for say.. (attack with sword) so i dont have to keep asking the DM, whos only reply is "roll a D20 and tell me the number" because hes too impatient to explain what a modifyer is.

any help would be greatly appreaciated, i know yall are probably annoyed that i dont just go buy the book , but ive not the fundage.

a nice added note. best answer will probably show up on people searching this question on google. so you can help tons of people by answering this question in a helpful way. kudos to those who can help.

    Hi,

I don't play Pathfinder myself, but the basics are the same for the D&D 3.x stuff.

Okay, so a Level 3 Character, multi-class Rogue and Magus. Assuming you took the first level of rogue, you'd gain ALL the 1st level abilities, saving throws, skill points. Then you took 2 levels of Magus, so that'd be Level 1 and 2 of the Magus Class abilities - Skill points, and Saving Throws... Note, they stack with the Rogue Numbers.

You'll have a Feat gained for 1st Level, and 3rd level.

You mention lack of fundage, not to be self-promoting, but I work with PCGen, and they offer a FREE character generation and maintenance tool called PCGen. Pathfinder is a big hit and the sets they offer in support of it is growing daily. You could just make your character using PCGen and the character would be Pathfinder rules legal.

Now, as to Combat Basics -

All major task resolutions use a d20 -Those include Skill checks, Combat Rolls (To Hit, Grapple, Combat Maneuvers), and Saving Throws.

The Formula is this - d20 + STAT + Modifiers

For Melee Combat you roll your d20, + Strength Bonus + Weapon Enhancement Bonus + Misc Bonuses (Weapon Focus, Greater Weapon Focus, Spells like Bless, Aid, Prayer, etc.)

The list of modifiers is actually quite lengthy, but as you can see it's a very dynamic thing.

For Ranged Combat you roll your d20 + Dexterity Bonus + Weapon Enhancement Bonus + Misc Bonuses

For Saving Throws - d20 + Saving Throw Base + Misc Bonuses

    Same with Skills.

Pathfinder does have an online resource to explain the rules.

I put a link to PCGen in for you. Good luck in this awesome hobby. Hope to see you over on our site.

    Cheers,

Andrew above answered it best, but there is one important issue I'd like to point out.

This is not a question about roleplaying. Roleplaying is when you get into character and act as your character would act.
