How do you combine images in photoshop?

I normally use GIMP but I just got Photoshop cs5 and I can't figure out how to layer photos!

This is what I do in GIMP:

basically layering light and bokeh and things like that. How do I open an image as a layer?

Thankyou!

Update:

Create a new layer (click the new layer icon on the layers palette). And copy and paste your photo onto it.

Have a look in your local library, you'll probably be able to borrow one of Scott Kelby's books, or other books on Photoshop.

    Or check out YouTube.

Adobe itself has excellent tutorials, too, both written and in video form, just start googling......

there is tons of help available out there.

Go to window>layers to see your layers pallette, or watch a tutorial on YouTube.
