How much will a decent gaming computer cost?

I'm sure this is one of "those" questions that everyone hates, but oh well. I tried looking around but have gotten all different ranges. $1000+, $700-900, etc.

So I'm looking for some more opinions. I'm just looking for something that I could get by on, that I could possibly upgrade later. Not anything that would be for hardcore gamers able to run the highest graphics settings on games.

So that said, how much do you guys think a decent or even lower-end gaming computer cost should I buy one custom-made from a site, or if I built it myself instead?

the best bang for the buck is within $800-1200 price point. Below it you sacrifice too much. Above - waste a lot. Cheaper options - with AMD X4 955, better ones - with Intel i5 2500K but only when overclocked properly. Such computer will not need CPU upgrades for a few years for sure. 4-8GB RAM is fine. Videocard - at least GTX 550 or ATI 6850 for serious gaming. Need good case, PSU , cooling, fast HDD like Samsung F3 or better SSD but it's still expensive.

Check this PC below - it's perfect:

The best way to get a good gaming machine (if you're not looking for a laptop) is by building it from custom parts yourself. Hit up newegg.com and look for some cool parts. You can build a high-end machine for around $800.

Mac computers from 400 to 1000 used and new. Not the vest but descent. Higher price better graphics.
