Does a Muslim Bride's Family Get A Dowry?
I was led to believe that in Islam, only the wife gets a dowry--more specifically, a mahr that is given directly to the wife so that, in the event of a divorce, she'll have a means to support herself later on in life.
Somebody has told me that the wife's family gets a dowry. In Islam, is this haram? Thanks.

In Islam, the husband provides a gift to the bride (based on his standard of living) that is hers to keep and do what she wills with it. This is the dowry or mahr. However, many centuries of tradition have warped this idea into grooms and their families having to pay lavish amounts to the bride and her family, or the reverse, a bride and her family having to pay out the nose to the groom and his family.
I see both of these "cultural" versions appalling! The bride should not have to "buy" her groom, nor should the groom have to "buy" his bride.
Please everyone! Come back to the traditions of the Qur'an and the Prophet (and his Family and Sahabah) and stop making people worry about how to afford a dowry (mahr) at the time their sons or daughters are being born!

You always have to be careful to separate the teaching of Islam from the customs of the Middle East. They are not the same. There are many things done in predominantly Muslim countries that have little to do with Islam, that everyone assumes are a part of Islam.
There are many predominantly Muslim countries...and I'm sure in some of them it is the custom to give the bride's family a Dowry.

no. the brides family is the one who gives the goats and chickens to the groom. that's an incentive for the groom to take the daughter off of the father's hands.
