Does anyone have any suggestions for treating goopy eyes?

My miniature horse weanling has yellowish goopy eyes and no matter how many times I clean them or apply the ointment from the vet, it doesn't seem to help. He does not have any other symptoms, doesn't appear to have allergies, the flies aren't very bad right now, and yet they still get really gross. His eyes tear up and he'll just have gobs of the goop at the corners of his eyes. He's only about three and a half months old, which is why I'm so worried about it. Anyone have the same (or similar) problem?

Update:

Mandy: I have been keeping it up for about two weeks without results. As for the fly mask, they don't make any small enough. He is a very small miniature and anything I put on him is very floppy and open and he can get off within five minutes because of how large it is.

Theotherhorse: I have consulted two veterinarians and they have given me the same advice: Use the ointment. It hasn't been working though (at least not that I can see) so I was curious to know if anyone has had to deal with this as well and if they had any ideas as to how to clear up his eyes.

keep doing what your doing. though my horse has sensitives eyes to the dust and flys in the summer i think and it gets really teary and goopy sometimes. (though your horse probably has a different cause) i find it to help when i run cold water over the horse's eyes so that clean water gets into their eyes and kind of flushes anything out... dont spray the hose up into the horses eyes just put it on a really low pressure/flow and leave the hose above the horse's eyes so it can run down his face. if he doesnt like the hose just take a really clean sponge and ring a sponge full of water down his face and over is eyes a couple of times.... i've worked with horses that got fly eggs in their eyes and running the water over their eyes helped so much and got all the nasty stuff out... good luck! i hope you have some luck with getting rid of whatever is wrong with the little guy!

Keep doing what your doing, and after you put the ointment on keep a flymask on.

It's possible he could have an eye infection. You'll want to check with your vet.
