Why do extreme Christian groups stock pile food and water for the end of the world?

I thought they believed if they are good Christians they would be taken up to Heaven before the end? Isn't this contradicting to belief?

Update:

The reason I ask is because I bought 5 water barrels, filled with camping equipment and candles etc. from some Mormons! I just thought they believed they would be taken up during the rapture!

You correctly identified the extremist ideas of the mormons!

Compare the bible and christian beliefs with the mormon book and beliefs and it is as plain as day that mormons only claim to be christian because they are afraid to stand up as an entirely separate religion!

Before that happens, and as a Christian I do not believe it will in the "left behind" theory, there will be great upheavals and storms, earthquakes, hurricanes, and destruction. having a food supply even to protect you when you lose employment, is always a good idea.

Not all of them -- there's pre- Tribulation and mid- Tribulation and Post-Tribulation believers. Like the rest of Christianity, there are a dozen sects who believe different things.

I think others who are not Christians do this too. I would rather think that they are waiting for a catastrophic event in which many people die but some are still living. I think everyone should be prepared for that.
