Is it appropriate for a manager to have some of their employees on Facebook as 'friends'?

Personally I would say it is inappropriate and would cause a serious conflict of interests.

Also it all depends on what your classifying what exactly a "friend" is.

You do something wrong that costs the company money and your up for a right rollicking.

Straight answer to a straight question. Are you going to accept the bollocking or get really pissed off that your friend gave you a right up and downer with a lose of pay.

Will they still be your beloved "friend" on Facebook or are you going to slag them off on it even though it was your fault?

Management and workers live in two separate worlds and "ne'er the twain shall meet" is as the saying goes!

I don't see why not. Work environment and what a manager does in his free time should be kept separate as far as discussions go while at work to preserve a level of professionalism that should be displayed in front of customers but as to what goes on in the manager's spare time is a totally different story. I mean as long as the manager doesn't start talking about that video their employee posted or about a picture that might have been a bit inappropriate or something I don't see why there should be any problem on the subject.

I wouldn't say it's inappropriate. Though it largely depends what the respective persons use facebook for ... since most people will complain about work at least once on facebook, it might not be considered wise. All though that depends how 'cool' your manager is and how formal your workplace is.

It definatley depends on where you work and how formal/informal it is. if you do decide to have your some of your employees or your manager as a freind be aware that things could go wrong... so unless your willing to completeley monitor everything you post and say i wouldn't add them because if you do something to tic your manager off it could effect work. honestly if it was me i wouldn't add my manager for reasons as to having to watch everything i say and do. but that's me i prefer to keep work relationships work and nothing else. but i wouldn't say it's innapropriate to have employees as your friends or vice versa, just be careful!!!

    =)

    Yes.

    Actually it is.

    You can communicate better here.

What you can't say to them in your office, you can say it her.

Using your facebook wisely can help you to strengthen your realtion with your employees.

    :)

I suppose it depends on where you work really.. Sometimes yes other times no, but if you get on with them outside of work it is!
