How do you determine deflection?

When finding the deflection of a beam at ANY point, on a beam supported at both ends, with a distributed load, we summed moments about THE point to one side of the beam or the other and included the reactions in our calculations.

I was looking at another student's solution from another class for a cantilevered beam, one support, with a distributed load and the reactions were not included. Is this right?

    It depends which side of the point the student summed the moments about. If they chose the free end, then there is no reaction. When you sum the moments about a single point on a beam, you're finding the internal moment of the beam at that point - imagine if you cut the beam at that location, and threw away one half of it and replaced it with a moment and a shear.

    For a cantilevered beam, the way your classmate did the problem is the fastest solution for that point - he/she didn't need the reactions.
